2018 US Open Golf: Favourites, Sleepers, and Predictions
2018 US Open Favourites and Sleepers
The US Open is the second major of the year and arguably the most difficult. There's a reason why all-time greats Sam Snead and Phil Mickelson never conquered this tournament. This year's iteration comes from Shinnecock, a worthy course that will test the mind and mettle of all its competitors.
We look at four players, two favourites and two sleepers, who could be making serious noise and potentially win the whole thing complete with betting odds:
All odds via SportsInteraction:
Odds to win 2018 US Open: +701
The world number-one will enter Shinnecock Hill as the favourite after dominating the St. Jude Classic. Johnson finished six strokes ahead of second and won his second tournament. This marks his third top-ten finish in the last five events.
Johnson reclaimed the top spot after a walk-off eagle last Sunday. The 33-year-old clinched his 18th PGA Tour title in scintillating fashion and is the hottest golfer walking into the US Open.
After some bad luck in 2017, Johnson looks to be back to his 2016 form. He returns to the scene of his first major and a win here puts him squarely in front as Player of the Year barring any major hiccups going forward.
Johnson is the man to beat as Shinnecock features a challenging fair with a treacherous course with unpredictable winds and uneven fairways. Johnson's precise driving is his ace-up-his-sleeve and the reason he cashes in.Dustin Johnson (+701)
Odds to win 2018 US Open: +1300
The 2011 winner looks to capture his second title and is third odds-wise. McIlroy has slowly but surely recaptured his form after starting the year ranked 11th. He's had four top-three finishes this year including winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational but also missed the cut in The Players Championship.
When the Irishman is rolling, he's hard to beat. He's struggled in Shinnecock since winning the title, however. He finished tied for ninth in 2015 but missed the cut in the last two years. He has yet to win a major since winning the PGA Championship in 2014.
Shinnecock will again test how much McIlroy has grown. But the 29-year-old already has the making of an all-time legend and arguably has the best swing on tour, which will be the x-factor throughout the weekend.Rory McIlroy (+1300)
Odds to win 2018 US Open: +4900
Golf's perpetual bridesmaid finally had his crowning moment winning the 2017 Masters but it's been a challenge since then. Garcia didn't qualify for this year's Masters and has fallen to 15th in the rankings thanks to missing the cut in three of his last four tournaments.
The Spaniard hasn't missed the cut for the US Open in over a decade and finished no worst than 21st in the last three tournaments. Shinnecock presents a different challenge but one he'll be ready for especially with his beautiful swing. Garcia can have a great start, he just needs to maintain his poise throughout.
Garcia will be a longshot in this tournament and could be trailing all tournament but despite his recent struggles, he's shown a great form and will be bringing out his best come the weekend.Sergio Garcia (+4900)
Odds to win 2018 US Open: +6600
The two-time US Masters winner enters the tournament as a dark horse. Watson has a terrible track record for the US Open failing to make the cut in three of the last four tournaments and not finishing higher than a tie for 32nd in the last seven years. But he's a great fit for Shinnecock.
Shinnecock will test each golfer's wits and guts, the latter of which he has in spades. Watson is one of the game's best finishers. For all his quirkiness, he can block everything out and focus in the later rounds. In a course that will require a lot of grinding, the tough-mindedness of Watson will count down the stretch.
Watson is also one of the best at driving and Shinnecock places a premium on the big swing. Having this plus the ability to bite down and finish strong makes him an outside contender to shock the world yet again.Bubba Watson (+6600)
