2017 NFL Regular Season Team Props
NFL Team Props for 2017
From off-season signings, to the Combines and NFL Entry Draft, then on to OTA's, mini-camps and the preseason, the NFL remains front and center 365 days a year. Popular online bookmakers post Super Bowl futures odds minutes after the Vince Lombardi Trophy is hoisted in February. Week 1 regular season odds have been on NFL betting boards for months – along with a truckload of Team and Player proposition offers. Here we look at some “way out there” lines as the quest for a perfect season, plus the race to avoid joining the dismal 2008 Detroit Lions, begins in just 54 more sleeps.
Legendary head coach Don Shula and his 1972 Miami Dolphins own an NFL record that will never be matched. Led by QB's Bob Griese and Earl Morrall, plus RB's Larry Csonka and Jim Lick, the Fins went 14-0 during the regular season. Miami then swept three playoff games by a combined 55-38 count, including a 14-7 Super Bowl Vll victory over Washington, to finish with a perfect 17-0 record. That's an unmatchable mark due to 19 wins constituting a "Perfect Season" in today's NFL.
Will There Be A Perfect Super Bowl LII Season?
Specials - Any Team to Finish 19-0
Although "The Club" is getting smaller, due to many of the players getting up there in age, some of the Dolphins still get together to celebrate when the last NFL undefeated team falls. Sometimes the wait is short but other times it can be brutally long. Case in point on the latter wait is the 2007 New England Patriots who went 18-0 before falling as double-digit chalk to the New York Giants during Super Bowl XLII. While it's rare - the bookies took a beating during that Super Bowl Sunday.
Carolina (2015) and Indianapolis (2009) are the next closest to perfection as they both reached a 14-0-0 mark prior to falling in Week 15. The Panthers and Colts went on to lose Super Bowl 50 and XLIV to Denver and New Orleans respectively. Though they dropped a 38-24 decision in Week 13, to the Miami Dolphins as fate would have it, the 1985 Chicago Bears finished at 18-1 after they pummelled the Patriots 46-10 in the NFL Championship match during their Super Bowl XX season.
Posting a "Perfect Season" is like finding a Unicorn and it is a wager that should be made with a limited dent to your bankroll. There is only one choice as backing YES to a 19-0 record will return $200 on a $10 ticket. If bookmakers offered a "NO" option, given the rarity of the feat, the price would come in near a (-10000) money line. Looking at "Team Win Totals" at SIA - the Patriots 12.5 victories is the highest number on the board and we can not see a 19-0 squad this season.
Any NFL Squads Up For a 16-0 Regular Season Run?
Specials - Any Team to Finish Regular Season 16-0
Bettors seeing a "Patriots like" runner on the horizon, that may fade in the playoffs, are receiving (+1600) odds on a 16-0 perfect 2017 NFL regular season. Since it's been done - it can longer be viewed as an impossible task. Joining the 1985 "Monsters of the Midway" San Francisco (1984) Minnesota (1998) Pittsburgh (2004) Green Bay (2011) and Carolina (2015) all posted 15-1 regular season records. Da 'Bears and the 49ers were the only Super Bowl winners in that select group.
Although we feel for anyone who may have been holding a futures ticket on those teams - some of the runs were over early. The Steelers streak ended very early (Week 2) while the 49ers and Vikings strings were snapped in Week 7 and 9 respectively. The Bears (13) Packers (15) and Panthers (16) perfect regular season ending games teased their ticket holders. As is the case when future bets near fruition, adding a hedge may come into play with the perfect regular season prop option.
Hopefully Cam Newton & Co. backers bet on the Falcons +7.5 (-110) spread price or (+270) ML as Atlanta posted a 20-13 win at the Georgia Dome during Week 16. The Panthers went on to bash the Buccaneers 38-10 in Week 17 to finish at 15-1 so a small hedge bet on the Dirty Birds would've turned a losing ticket into cash. Road games at Oakland (11) and Pittsburgh (15) may be stumbling blocks but the Patriots have a chance at 16-0 so Tom Brady & Crew are worth a $20 investment.
How To Bet on Losing National Football League Teams
Specials - Any Team to Finish Regular Seaon 0-16
Piling cash into perennial NFL losers, especially with straight up prices, is loaded with pitfalls. While no team has ever gone 19-0 and only one has enjoyed a 16-0 regular season - a 0-16 season is also difficult to achieve. To sink to that level, where only Lions have previously prowled, you have to suck and have zero luck all season long. Being as my first NFL game was at Tiger Stadium in 1973, the year Twenty Hundred and Eight was a stern test of allegiance for this Motor City Kittens fanatic.
Being the exclusive member of the Ultimate Futility Club (UFC) is lonely but when someone points to the 517-268 combined total points (32.3 to 16.8 PGA) StatsGuru can only cling tightly to his Barry Sanders jersey. Some Cat fans try to rope the Buccaneers into the UFC cage as Tampa Bay went 0-14 in 1976. We are not in that crowd as that was the Bucs inaugural season not their 79th f'ing year. Many have tried to enter the UFC as ten teams have etched (eked out) 1-15 marks.
Some NFL elite are on that list as Dallas (1989) Indianapolis (1991) and New England (1990) all endured one-win seasons. Carolina won their season opener but went 0-15 the rest of the way in 2001 while Miami needed OT to beat Baltimore 22-16 in South Beach during Week 15 in 2007. Cleveland spoiled their "perfect" season when they won 20-17 in San Diego during Week 16 last year. The Browns, Jets and 49ers are all projected to win 4.5 games while the Bears number is five.
CFL, MLB and MLS Are Bridges to a New NFL Season
Completing our thoughts on a possible 0-16 season - the four teams listed above all have a shot at joining the Lions in Loser Land. One has to wonder if the NFL ever wants to see an egg laid again though. We see all 32 teams earning at least one W in 2017. That said, the UNDER on the Bears +5.0 (-118) total odds on the "Regular Season Wins" futures board at SportsInteraction deserves a few shekels. San Fran and Cleveland are on Chicago's slate but it is "Whoa, Nellie" after that.
