2017 Athletics World Championships Picks

2017 Athletics World Championships Picks

The sixteenth edition of the IAAF World Championships will be held in London this year and it is one of the most highly anticipated in recent memory.

Some of the best emerging athletes will be on show as they try and secure gold for their country, while the event also acts as a swan song for the great Usain Bolt who has announced his retirement (there will be a few sprinters who will be glad to see the back of the great man!)

If you're looking to bet on some of the events, look no further. As always we have the best odds from some of the top providers right here, and below we outline some of the best options from the Championships, which run from Friday, August 4th until Sunday August 13th.

Odds below are courtesy of Bet365.com and all times are GMT.

Athletics World Championships Best Picks

Mens 100m / Win Only
2017 Athletics World Championships - 100m Odds

This is always one of the most anticipated events, and in recent years it's all been about one man - Usain Bolt. The legendary Jamaican has eight Olympic gold medals and is the current record holder for most gold medals at an IAAF World Championships events with eleven. What is most impressive about Bolt is that he is the world record holder for both the 100m and 200m events.

When an athlete dominates an event in the fashion that Bolt has, the event itself can sometimes be written off as dull or predictable, yet Bolt's infectious personality and general likability has, if anything, breathed more life into the sport. Spectators flock to the event to see the great man and it is a pleasure to witness his humility after his big wins.

As far as betting is concerned, it looks just as likely as ever that Bolt will take home the gold in London. He appears at very short odds (-250) with countryman Yohan Blake the closest rival at +600. Blake has certainly come close to Bolt, and his career best times are right up there, but on the big stage it is hard to see anyone pipping Bolt at the post. Expect him to go out in style.

The final of the mens 100m will be held on Saturday August 5th at 9:45pm (GMT)

Mens 110m Hurdles / Win Only
2017 Athletics World Championships - 110m Hurdles

The overwhelming favourite is another Jamaican, Omar McLeod, who will be aiming for his first Championships medal. The 23 year old won gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games and has also clocked the equal-fifth fastest time in the history of the race. He will certainly take some beating, and you can jump on him at odds of -250.

It may be worth a parlay with Bolt in the 100m as the price is quite short on its own!

It is probably a sign of McLeod's likely dominance in this event that the second name on this list is Aries Merritt. The 2012 Olympic gold medalist and 110m hurdles world record holder just turned 32 and is going to have to produce something special to beat a man ten years younger. His price is (+700) and you can catch the final on Monday August 7th at 9:30pm.

Mens Pole Vault / Win Only
2017 Athletics World Championships - Mens Pole Vault

The favourite here is Sam Kendricks. The bronze medalist at the Rio Olympics has shown the best signs in the lead up events and will be a tough proposition. However, his price of -125 is very short and it's hard to see why when you've got Renaud Lavillinie breathing down his neck. The current world record holder, 2015 bronze medalist and 2016 Olympic silver medalist will be a serious threat, and you can jump on the Frenchman at great odds of +300.

Interestingly, the gold medalist from Rio de Janeiro sits at seventh on this list. Thiago Braz da Silva excelled in his home country in 2016, however the bookies don't think he's a chance and have listed him at +2500. Very tempting odds if you believe he can prove the doubters wrong.

Canadian fans will be looking at the 2015 gold medalist Shawnacy Barber who leapt above the field in Beijing to take home gold. He sits at fifth on the list at odds of +1600 and is another with an outside chance at victory. The final round of the mens pole vault will begin at 7:35pm, August 8th.

Mens High Jump / Win Only
2017 Athletics World Championships - High Jump

Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim is the overwhelming favourite here at odds of -334. It is not hard to see why when you consider he has cleared the second highest mark in history - just 1/2 an inch short of the magic eight foot marker. He is still chasing a Championships gold medal after coming second in 2013. He also achieved a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics and bronze in London in 2012.

Hot on his heels will be one of Canada's greatest athletic exports, Derek Drouin. Currently the Olympic and World Champion, Derek shared bronze with Barshim in 2012 and took home the gold at Rio and also the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. You can take a punt on Drouin at +1000.

The final round of the mens high jump will be held from 7pm on Sunday, August 13th.

Men's Shot Put / Win Only
2017 Athletics World Championships - Shot Put

The favourite in the men's shot put is Ryan Crouser, and the Olympic record holder will be looking to add a World Championship gold to his Rio de Janeiro gold medal in 2016. His odds of -275 suggest he is a heavy favourite, but fellow American Joe Kovacs will present the biggest challenge.

Kovacs was the runner up to Crouser at the Rio Olympics and will be looking for the best form of revenge with a victory here. He has also won at the World Championships previously, taking out gold in Beijing two years ago, so he is good value at next on the list at +350.

The final round of mens shot put will be held from 8:35pm, Sunday August 6th.

Men's Javelin Throw / Win Only
2017 Athletics World Championships - Javelin Throw

This year's javelin contest appears to be a two horse race between two Germans. Thomas Rohler comes in as the slight favourite with odds of -138 and appears to be in good form as he threw 93.90m back in May this year, the second longest mark of all time.

Well it was until Johannes Vetter threw an incredible 94.44m last month and rocketed up the list of favouritism. You can back Vetter at odds of +162.

Rohler is the current Olympic champion and is probably the pick simply because he is proven on the big stage, however Vetter is arguably the in form thrower and appears at more tempting odds. Bar a catastrophe, the pair should both feature on the final podium.

The final round of the mens javelin throw starts at 8:15pm, Saturday August 12th.

Men's Discus Throw / Win Only
2017 Athletics World Championships - Discus Throw

The favourite for the discus crown currently sits with Daniel Stahl, although this is an event that could really be won by anyone in the top six. Stahl currently holds the season-best throw, which is also the ninth best throw of all time. He is available at +120.

The only man on the list that has thrown longer than Stahl in his career is Piotr Malachowski from Poland, who's ranked fifth on the list of all time throws. This was back in 2013, however, and he will need to rediscover this form if he is any chance of topping Stahl in London. +550 is quite a tempting price for the 2015 Championships gold medalist, who also won silver at the Rio Olympics.

Interestingly, Robert Harting appears ahead of Malachowski on the odds list despite being in the twilight of his career. The German has won three World Championship gold medals and finished top of the podium at the London 2012 Olympics so it will be hard to write him off, although Stahl is definitely going to be tough to beat here.

The final round of the men's discus commences Saturday, August 5th at 7:25pm.

Men's Hammer Throw / Win Only
2017 Athletics World Championships - Hammer Throw

Possibly the shortest favourite in the history of any event, Pawel Fajdek is practically un-backable at -1200. The Polish thrower has won gold at the last two World Championships and has held the longest throw for the last four years.

If you're actually considering an outsider, you could take a look at Dillshod Nazarov who won the gold at Rio, however at +4000 it would be hard to see him win. The final of the hammer throw will be held at 8:30pm on Friday, August 11th.

Don't forget to join in the conversation on Facebook and discuss who you believe will win in each event. As always, best of luck!
