Raptors Report! Pros and Cons of a Gasol Trade
Latest Raptors News
Make it four-in-a-row for the Raptors, one of the NBA's hottest teams, following their 126-113 win over Phoenix on Tuesday evening. Toronto has now won eight of its last ten games and now embark on a four-game western swing beginning with Memphis this tonight. The Raptors have been killing it lately but they are still shaky on the betting lines...
- 5-0 - Toronto's record over their last 5 home games (average of 12.5 points).
- 117.6 - Toronto's average points over their last games - Third in the league behind only Golden State (121.8) and Houston (119)
- 2-3 - Toronto's against the spread (ATS) record in its last five games.
- 3/2 - over/under record in Toronto's last five games. Previous games have all gone "over"
Why or Why Not a Marc Gasol Trade Benefits Toronto
Toronto visiting Memphis comes on the heels of hot rumours regarding a potential trade between both teams for Grizzlies' All-Star centre Marc Gasol. The rumours have speculated that thanks to a spat with former coach David Fizdale a few weeks ago, Gasol is rumouredly on his way out of Memphis.
The Raptors could potentially offer starting centre Jonas Valanciunas and one of Lucas Noguiera and Bruno Caboclo plus draft picks for Gasol, who is on contract until the 2018-19 season with a player option in 2019-20. Gasol is set to make upwards of $24 million in 2019 and $25 mil in 2020.
Pulling off this trade helps Toronto more than it hinders them. The only con here will be felt years from now if Valanciunas breaks out and becomes the All-Star the Raptors drafted him to be. Losing a first-round pick and one of the Brazilians could also hurt the Raptors' depth. Adding Gasol also hardly guarantees the Raptors progress further than they already had without him.
This deal will benefit Toronto in the short-term especially with Gasol's style. The three-time All-Star was also a Defensive Player of the Year (2013) and not only anchors the middle but has one of the best hands for a big man. He is in his prime and averaged career-highs in points (19.5), assists (4.6), and three-pointers made (1.4 per game) last season.
Adding Gasol will cement Toronto as a top-three team in the East and could help them get over either Cleveland or Boston. The 32-year-old has plenty of playoff experience and is a fierce competitor. His play will elevate the likes of Serge Ibaka, Jakob Poeltl, and Pascal Siakam and will give the Raptors a much-needed playmaker outside Kyle Lowry.
It's a gamble but it's one the Raptors need to pull off right now.
Toronto To Secure Top-3 Seed in December
The Raptors sit comfortably at third place in the Eastern Conference with a 15-7 record behind only Boston Celtics and Cleveland. Toronto is five games behind Boston. The Raps are second in the Atlantic Division also behind Boston and have a 2.5 game lead ahead of third-place Philadelphia.
With their upcoming schedule being mostly against losing teams (10 of their remaining 12 games in December), the Raptors shouldn't only solidify their top-three standing in the East but maybe even tie or overtake Cleveland. This will be the Raptors' easiest stretch and they should take full advantage of it.
When Are The Raptors Playing?
Toronto is in action tonight at 8:00 PM ET in Memphis against the Grizzlies. The Raptors are -5.5 on the spread while the Grizzlies are +5.5. Toronto is 6-4 straight-up (SU) against Memphis in their last ten meetings and 5-4-1 against the spread (ATS). The under has hit in seven of their last ten games.
The Raptors will be without backup point guard Delon Wright who is still nursing a shoulder injury while the Grizzlies do not have starting point guard Mike Conley due to an Achilles injury while big men Marc Gasol (foot) and Brandan Wright (groin) are probable to play.
Toronto should win this game on the strength of their offensive momentum. Memphis is dysfunctional and injury-plagued while just having undergone major coaching changes with the future of Gasol up-in-the-air. The spread seems to underestimate Toronto and they are 6-2 ATS against Western teams on the road. Bet Toronto while their spread is still small.
