NBA Regular Season Win Totals: Best Bets
It's not just a joke when fans remark that the best part of the NBA is during its offseason.
As the whirlwind summer that wreaked havoc with teams everywhere has passed, it's a bit safe to predict how teams will do now. Sportsbooks offer the Props section where you get to wager whether a team will go over or under their expected win total.
Also looking at the line movement gives an idea which teams the public is scrutinizing.
Teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder and Philadelphia 76ers are trending upwards with all their offseason upgrades whilst the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks could be in for a rough season. Still, it's best to avoid the obvious teams. Instead, here are five teams' regular season win totals worth betting on...
Boston Celtics
Under 55.5 Wins: -165
The line movement indicates the public isn't that confident in the new-look Celtics.
While adding Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward adds bonafide playmaking, the team only returns one of their starters from last season. Gone are key players in Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Amir Johnson, and Avery Bradley. Coach Brad Stevens will have his work cut out in re-integrating the team and it could take a while.
The Celtics also play in an Atlantic Division that features another 50-win threat, the Toronto Raptors and a 76ers team on the rise. Matching last year's 53-win total shouldn't be an issue but getting upwards of 55 will be a stretch given how rocky the first few months might be.
Toronto Raptors
Over 48.5 Wins: -135
While most of the top teams retooled and overhauled rosters, the Raptors remained quiet. The team lost key players but added C.J. Miles and re-signed Serge Ibaka and Norm Powell to longer deals. Miles will add scoring off the bench and the developments of Jakob Poetl and Delon Wright will be key.
With the loss of Joseph and Lowry's injury woes, the Raptors will need Fred VanVleet to bring the leadership he showed in the G-League when he led Raptors 905 to its first title. Any improvement from center Jonas Valanciunas helps. The Raptors stayed pat but other than the Sixers, no other team made drastic improvements. A 50-win season is within grasp.
Los Angeles Clippers
Over 43.5 Wins: -135
The Clippers lost superstar point guard Chris Paul and their two main shooting guards: J.J. Reddick and sixth man Jamal Crawford but it's not scary to think they'll still win close to 50 games and be a playoff team. The loss of Paul stings but helps Doc Rivers implement more flexible open ball movement while the scrappy Patrick Beverley and EuroLeague star Milos Teodosic will keep their point guard play at a high level.
Shooters Lou Williams and Danilo Gallinari essentially replace the scoring from Reddick and Crawford and they still have one of the best big man combos in Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. Should Griffin stay healthy, he'll have more room to grow his playmaking.
Utah Jazz
Over 41 Wins: -135
The Jazz are getting the Clippers treatment since they lost their biggest piece in Gordon Hayward but outside of him, the Jazz made improvements. They got a coup drafting explosive scorer Donovan Mitchell and adding Ricky Rubio and Thabo Sefolosha. Rubio gives the Jazz deft playmaking while Sefolosha bolsters their perimeter defense.
Playing in the deadly Northwest division should take some toll on the Jazz especially with the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves making significant additions. But this is prety much the same team that won 51 games with a banged-up roster.
50 wins might be a longshot but 42 wins is a lock.
New Orleans Pelicans
Under 39.5 Wins: -120
The Pelicans have slowly regressed since their last NBA playoff appearance two seasons ago.
While they improved by adding former All-Star Rajon Rondo and defensive stalwart Tony Allen, so has half the Conference. It also remains to be seen if they can get through a season without injuries or personnel issues.
Demarcus Cousins is an enigma. He'll form one of the best big man tandems with Davis but the jury is still out if they can coexist or if he'll continue listening to head coach Alvin Gentry. Winning 40 games shouldn't be an issue with a healthy fully-functional team but that's already a big if.
