NBA Picks: Spurs at Raptors Point Spread
San Antonio Spurs at Toronto Raptors Odds
The light at the end of the tunnel has grown dim for the Toronto Raptors after losing three straight, including a 35-point blowout against Charlotte and tough defeats against two of the worst teams in the association. Perhaps more worrisome has been the slew of technical and flagrant fouls called on Kyle Lowry, showing the level of frustration that the all-star point guard has been experiencing. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the San Antonio Spurs are in the midst of another 60-point season, winning eight of their last ten, including an impressive overtime victory against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
A sound loss against the third-worst team in the NBA cast a shadow over the Raptors. Losing DeMar DeRozan to injury during the loss against the Suns rubbed lemon juice into the wound. This subtracts one of the top scorers in the NBA from the rotation, and the rest of the Raptors will need to make up the 27.9 points he generates each game. Patrick Patterson may miss another game, digging the hole deeper. Pau Gasol broke his hand recently, and will be out of the Spurs lineup. Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili may also rest ailments. The Spurs beat the Cavs without Gasol, showing that Toronto’s injury woes will have a greater effect on the outcome.

Under Gregg Popovich, the machine rolls on, as the legendary coach continues his decades of winning. This season, the Spurs have been top five in offensive efficiency and top three defensively, only 2.5 games behind the Golden State Warriors for the best record in the association. They have the best record in the NBA on the road (19-4), better than their home results (16-5). Earlier this year, the Spurs ran the Raptors off the court with a 110-82 dismantling of Toronto in San Antonio. Last year, the Raptors and the Spurs won their home games against each other, with both games going down to the wire.
Given the injury woes and the Raptors recent difficulties, it’s tough to see Toronto coming out on top for this matchup, even if Lowry gets crazy hot and scores 50 points. The Spurs are one of the deepest teams in the NBA, allowing them to insert good players in place of wounded ballers, maintaining team momentum. In fact, they destroyed Brooklyn last night while Leonard, Gasol, Parker and Ginobili sat. Without DeRozan and Patterson, the Raptors have no way of matching the Spurs lineup, handcuffing coach Casey’s rotation strategy. The return of Sullinger was a boost, but he’s on restricted minutes, limiting contributions.
All signs point to a routine, if not dominant, win by the Spurs. However, the lines appear to be more uncertain, perhaps due to Popovich’s penchant for resting his players during the regular season. The spread is a paltry 3.5, which the Spurs should be able to beat. A total of 207.5 also appears to be a bit low, given San Antonio’s offensive production and Kawhi Leonard’s career year. Wagering over represents less risk, but as always, keep tabs on the lineups before the game to avoid unpleasant surprises.
NBA Picks Tonight | January 24, 2017
Tuesday night in the NBA features a bunch of close calls, including the Boston Celtics visiting the Washington Wizards. Playing at home and earning an 8-2 record over the last ten, some sportsbooks still list the Wiz as underdogs, despite a two-game losing streak for the Celtics. With a tiny spread of one point, the Celtics-Wizards game appears to be the second-best betting opportunity of the evening, behind the Spurs-Raptors matchup.
