NBA Picks: Lakers at Clippers Point Spread
L.A. Lakers at Clippers Raptors
No longer the basketball Gods of southern California, the Los Angeles Lakers are in the middle of a long rebuild now that the Black Mamba has left the association. With Kobe gone, Lakers draft picks have had a chance to develop without having to watch Kobe lift mid-range jumpers like it’s 1999. The Clippers became the best team in Los Angeles through their super trio of Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. However, they’ve yet to break through to elite status, falling short of the conference finals since Paul joined the team in 2011.
Neither the Clippers nor the Lakers will be at full strength for this afternoon’s tilt. Both squads will be without key power forwards because of knee issues. Larry Nance Jr. still needs a week or two to heal a bone bruise while Blake Griffin will be returning from knee surgery after the all-star break. The last time these two teams met, the Clippers were also dealing with an injury to Chris Paul, which helped the Lakers end an 11-game losing skid against their L.A. rivals. With Paul back in the lineup, the Clippers should be able to roll over the less experienced Lakers with relative ease.

Two of the Clippers big three needed to be injured for the Lakers to end their streak of futility, and the game was still fairly close, ending in a 111-102 score. Blake Griffin missing from the lineup hurts the Clips, but the team should still be able to win without too much of a struggle. It’s easy to forget that Chris Paul is among the finest points guards of this generation, capable of singlehandedly willing his team to victory. DeAndre Jordan will make life hell for Julius Randle and other Lakers bigs while J.J. Redick will knock down threes against the Lakers suspect defense.
The Lakers defense ranks at bottom rungs of the league while the Clippers offense is among the top six in the NBA. Since the calendar changed to 2017, the Lakers have had a habit of losing or winning big, including a 21-point loss against the Blazers and a 40-point defeat against the Spurs of their last two games. After a horrible losing streak to end 2016, the Clippers are on a five-game roll, earning large margin wins. As such, a point spread of 11 for the Clippers shouldn’t be difficult for Paul and crew to achieve. In terms of totals, the Clippers defense and Griffin’s absence should suppress scoring, making an under bet on 216 total points a more attractive prospect than betting over, which appears to carry the most risk.
NBA Picks Tonight | January 14, 2017
Now that the NFL divisional playoffs have arrived, the NBA is taking it easy on Saturday with only five games on the schedule. Despite the lack of matchups, you’ll be able to find solid wagering opportunities. The New Orleans Pelicans are listed as underdogs against the Chicago Bulls, offering a solid payout. The Pelicans somehow won on the road without Davis recently, and the Bulls have been on a losing streak due to a strong flu and weak shooting.
Chicago will still be shorthanded and Davis should be back in the lineup, giving New Orleans and NBA wagering fans a good chance at an upset result. If you’re looking for an overwhelming favorite, the San Antonio Spurs play against the Phoenix Suns, which should result in the lopsided destruction of a rebuilding Phoenix Suns squad that's in the middle of a tank.
