Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Picks
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Picks 2016
In a field with very little separating the favorites from the longshots, this race will give serious handicappers plenty of reasons to dig for a price. Bob Baffert trainee Noted and Quoted is the lukewarm favorite at 9/2 on the morning line after upsetting in the Grade 1 Chandelier. That effort, while solid, was hardly brilliant, and this gal is facing a much deeper and more talented field this time around. In fact, Baffert's "other" entry, American Gal (6/1) may have more upside. American Gal is 2 for 2 sprinting and will have to carry her speed a route of ground while breaking from the far outside post 12, but she might be quick enough to clear this bunch early. Union Strike (6/1) was a very impressive winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and projects as a major threat from just off the pace, but will be making her first start around two turns.
- 1st: (#9) Union Strike
- 2nd: (#3) Valadorna
- 3rd: (#12) American Gal
- 4th: (#11) Daddys Lil Darling
Maiden winner has look of contender
Valadorna is just a maiden winner with two starts under her belt, but the Mark Casse trainee looked stylish beating maiden special weight foes October 7 at Keeneland by six lengths. That effort was preceded by a fine second-place effort in her career debut. Top pilot Julien Leparoux was aboard for both of those starts and appears to fit this filly like a glove. Valadorna's ability to close ground and handle two turns are both valuable commodities in this race, and she only needs slight improvement to find herself in the thick of things turning for home.
Picking up longshot prices in exotics
It would be difficult to find a young runner that has been more consistent than Daddys Lil Darling (12/1). This Kenny McPeek-trained filly won the Grade 2 Pocahontas September 17 at Churchill Downs and followed that effort with a runner-up finish in the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades October 7 at Keeneland. She's finished off the board just once in four career starts and should be picking off rivals through the lane with regular jockey Corey Lanerie in the irons. With Honors (10/1) is worth a look while making her second start on dirt after finishing second in the Grade 1 Chandelier behind Noted and Quoted. Jamyson 'n Ginger (8/1) recorded a huge figure last out at Belmont over a sloppy track, but is an unlikely candidate to repeat that effort.
