Breeders'Cup Distaff Picks 2016

Is the three year-old unbeaten champion Songbird (6/5) unbeatable? That is the question her seven rivals will face as the dominant speedster puts her 11 for 11 record on the line against the deepest and most talented field she's ever faced - and her first test against older rivals. Songbird, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, will break from the rail with regular jockey Mike Smith aboard. No one has so much as breathed upon the indomitable filly in eleven starts - her closest rivals never coming closer than three and three quarter lengths. While it seems certain the Songbird will be pushed harder from the opening bell in the Distaff, it's equally certain that this runner is a freak and could simply overpower this potent field.

  1. 1st: (#5) Stellar Wind
  2. 2nd: (#1) Songbird
  3. 3rd: (#8) Beholder
  4. 4th: (#7) Im a chatterbox

Top Contenders

Stellar Wind (5/2) finished runner-up in last year's BC Distaff and has narrowly bested two-time Breeders' Cup winner Beholder (5/2) in their last two starts. Both runners earned massive Beyer Speed Figures of 110 and 106 for those efforts, which is much faster than Songbird's best figure of 101. Still, the figures don't always tell the whole story as Songbird has only run as fast as she's needed to. These two challengers pose the greatest threat to Songbird with Stellar Wind perhaps deserving of slightly more credit given her recent victories over Beholder. Stellar Wind is certainly in the prime of her career while Beholder may have lost a step or two in 2016 compared to previous years.

Live Longshots

The fact that I'm a Chatterbox (12/1) and Curalina (12/1) are double digit odds on the morning line speaks to the star-quality in this field. Both runners have been among the best in their division for the past two years and both enter the BC Distaff in great form. I'm a Chatterbox won with laughable ease in the Grade 1 Spinster October 9 at Keeneland and Curalina was a game second in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign against Cavorting, a runner who would have stood a good chance of winning this race had she not been injured. It would be no surprise to see either filly step up with a huge race and challenge the top three of Songbird, Stellar Wind and Beholder. In fact, the betting value of the Distaff likely depends on one of these gals crashing the party.

Handicapping MLB Starting Pitchers For Baseball Betting
Major League Baseball revolves around pitching, more so when the playoffs roll around in October. Contenders with big bats and slick fielders will only go as far as their pitching staff allows. As such, handicapping starting pitchers reveals the odds that a team will win an individual ballgame. Baseball clubs with the best starting pitchers have a much greater chance of winning pennants and World Series rings.
