The NCAA announced on Thursday that it will cancel the 2020 March Madness basketball tournaments for both men and women. NHL season has been suspended. MLB season has been postponed for two weeks.

The NCAA announced on Thursday, March 17 that it will cancel the 2020 March Madness basketball tournaments for both men and women. It was previously thought that the tournament would be played in front of empty stands, but that step turned out not to be enough.

NCAA statement: “This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.”

NHL followed NBA also on Thursday when they announced that the remainder of the 2019 - 2020 season would be paused until the global COVID-19 pandemic has been stopped. The NBA season was suspended a day earlier like we reported yesterday.

MLB statement

NHL season could go on until July

NHL statement regarding the possible return of the season:

“Our goal is to resume play as soon as it is appropriate and prudent, so that we will be able to complete the season and award the Stanley Cup. Until then, we thank NHL fans for your patience and hope you stay healthy.”

There has been speculation that the 2019 - 2020 season if resumed, could go on until the end of July after owners of ice hockey arenas were asked about the availability of their buildings for NHL action late in the summer.

If the season can’t be resumed, this would be the second time in NHL history that the Stanley Cup can’t be awarded after a season has already started - the last time was in 1919 when the Spanish Flu stopped the Stanley Cup finals after 5 matches.

NCAA will lose a lot of money

Last year March Madness generated almost a billion dollars in revenue for the NCAA from ticket sales alone. NBA and NHL could still resume in 2020, but we won’t see March Madness games in 2020 no matter what happens with the pandemic.

The NCAA will lose a lot of money, and the implications of the COVID-19 could be substantial even in the future.
