Woodbine Mile 2017 Predictions

Woodbine Mile 2017 Predictions
The 21st running of the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile has drawn a deep and talented field of 12 with the gates set to open at 6:34 EST Saturday, September 16 in the Breeders' Cup Win and You're In qualifying event.

Woodbine Mile 2017

The Breeders’ Cup Mile is one of the more anticipated turf races of the year in North America and the Woodbine Mile has proven a popular and viable launching pad in recent years with stars like Wise Dan and Tepin winning both races in recent years. The usual mixture of top domestic and European talent will assemble for the 2017 renewal of the Woodbine Mile in an event that will hold plenty of intrigue and opportunity for horse players.

5/2 morning line favorite Deauville looks like a beatable favorite. The Aidan O’Brien trainee has stellar connections and class to spare, but has not shown much of a finishing move in any of his seven starts this year. Deauville has finished second or third in five of those starts, including an uninspiring third last out in the Grade 1 Arlington Million against a mediocre field. After racing at a mile and an eighth and a mile and a quarter in his last two starts, Deauville will turn back to the flat mile distance at which he’s winless in three career tries. Not taking anything away from this solid performer, but I’ll loook to beat Deauville for the top spot in this race.

World Approval (7/2) powered away impressively in the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap in his last start, earning a stellar Beyer Speed Figure of 108 for the effort – a career-best and field-best number. World Approval certainly appears to be heading into the Woodbine Mile in top form while making his second start off the layoff and working well Sept. 1 in a five furlong move at the Spa. This guy is certainly dangerous on all angles and seems likely to usurp Deauville in the wagering.

Like World Approval, Conquest Panthera (12/1) is also trained by Mark Casse and has a big chance in this race. The five year-old son of Kitten’s Joy has always been comfortable over the Woodbine lawn, training well there and winning both of his career starts, including a win last out in the Grade 2 Play the King Stakes where he overcame a troubled start. Conquest Panthera is a great value-based selection as is the aptly-named Long on Value (15/1) who will be stretching out to a mile after sprinting capably on the turf in his last four starts. This versatile veteran is a graded stakes winner going further than a mile and has been working lights-out for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.
