UFC Calgary Fight Card, Odds, Predictions

UFC Calgary Fight Card, Odds, Predictions
Dustin Poirier, along with thousands of insatiable UFC fans, got the rematch they clamoured for. Following a controversial "No Contest" after their original bout, former champion Eddie Alvarez and Poirier will do it again. This time, a winner is likely to emerge. Regardless if it's Alvarez or Poirier, it will be just as thrilling as the first; the main card starts 8:00 PM ET on CTV TWO.

A Most-Explosive Rematch Between Alvarez and Poirier

It was an anticlimactic conclusion to one of 2017’s greatest fights. Alvarez and Poirier went at it for nearly ten minutes. Both fighters hurt each other repeatedly though Alvarez had Poirier dead-to-rights until the illegal knee ended the fight abruptly.

For the rematch, Alvarez is currently the slight underdog at +125 while Poirier is the favourite at -160.

155 Weight 155
69″ Reach 72″
40″ Leg Reach 40″

The fans are the ultimate winners in this bout. Both Alvarez and Poirier have rarely been involved in a boring fight thanks to their aggressive high-output style. Alvarez is defending his “most violent man” title thanks to his last four bouts ending in a finish. Likewise, Poirier’s last three also had a violent outcome.

Poirier was winning the first fight on the scorecards. He was outstriking Alvarez 73-44 and had him wobbling in round two. But Alvarez is notorious for toughing it out despite being visibly hurt. He caught Poirier coming in and began to unload. Both men were rocked but it was Alvarez on the attack right before the illegal knee.

Following the fight, both fighters had impressive performances. Alvarez became the first man to defeat and stop Justin Gaethje. Poirier would become the second man to do so. With both fighters riding this momentum heading to the fight, fans should expect a most violent affair.

Alvarez vs Poirier 2 Betting Trends & Tidbits

Fans are torn over who to bet here. Poirier opened as a favourite and remains so although money has gone back and forth between him and Alvarez. Expect the trend to continue until the opening bell.

  • Alvarez opened at +105 and his line has been bet up by 12.8% since
  • Poirier opened at -145 and his line has been bet down by 4.5% since
  • Main event UFC fighters who opened as favourites are 13-7 in 2018
  • Alvarez is 4-1 in his last five fights as an underdog
  • Poirier is 4-1 in his last five fights as a favourite

Poirier is the rightful favourite. He is faster, younger, and has a more diverse skill set. As the first fight showed, he was completely in control until he got caught. If he has a weakness, it’s his recklessness. Poirier has been knocked out in previous fights because he lost his cool and rushed in too quickly.

But as he showed in the Gaethje fight, Poirier takes his time more and will chip away until the opponent falls. Alvarez has this uncanny ability to fight back even when it looks like he is overmatched. His toughness is legendary and even if Poirier lights him up, he will find a way to hurt Poirier back. This bout could be a repeat of the first but with a finish.

Prediction: Poirier will control this fight utilizing his superior speed and diverse striking. But instead of getting reckless, he will take his time and slowly but surely whittle down Alvarez. Poirier wins via a late T/KO or a judges’ decision.

Our Record: 15-9

Lock it Up: For Joanna Jedrzejczyk (-285) versus Tecia Torres (+205). Jedrzejczyk should have no problems handling Torres, who is a point-fighter who lacks any real finishing ability. She’ll keep the fight standing and outstrike Torres to a clear-cut decision using her superior reach and technique.

Our Record: 17-7

Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Underdog Pick: the self-proclaimed “hardest hitter” Jeremy Stephens (-105) should be the favourite against Jose Aldo (-125) at this juncture. Stephens’ size, durability, and crowding ability will be huge against the fading former champion. Aldo is more skilled but Stephens’ power and pressure will be too much.

Our Record: 9-12

Jeremy Stephens

Don’t Bet on It: Hakeem Dawodu (-370) versus Austin Arnett (+260) will be a slobber knocker that should see Dawodu, the Canadian, with his hand raised. However, he is coming off a loss as a significant favourite and Arnett is no pushover. It’s tough to justify a bet for Dawodu even if he is the likely winner.
