Tottenham Odds To Win The Premier League in 2017-18

Tottenham Odds To Win The Premier League in 2017-18
We are just weeks away from the 2017/18 English Premier League Season and Tottenham fans know that they are agonisingly close to the title. We take a look at Spurs' schedule, potential lineup, and discuss their chances of success.

Tottenham Odds To Win The Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur are one of England’s premier clubs with a rich and illustrious history. You will find fans of the club in all corners of the globe owing to over one hundred years of success both domestically and in Europe. Spurs hold a number of impressive records and firsts.

Back in 1901, the club won their first FA Cup title, becoming the first and only non-league team to win the tournament since the inception of the Football League in 1888. This feat remains unmatched today, and in an era of professionalism and financial distance separating the biggest clubs in England from the non-league minnows, it is unlikely this record will ever change.

History counts for little when modern football is concerned. It is common knowledge that Tottenham have not won a title in the Premier League era, but few (aside from Spurs fans of course) actually realise that the drought extends back to 1961. This is a long time to wait for a league title and fans old enough to remember the last success will not be holding their breath when their team gets underway in mid-August.

Odds To Win The English Premier League in 2017 2018

However things are looking promising for the North London club. They are in the middle of their most successful spell in the top flight for over 60 years, having finished top-three in two consecutive seasons for the first time since 1952. Closer to home, 2016/17 was the first season in which they had finished higher on the league table than great rivals Arsenal, a considerable achievement considering the strike power of their noisy neighbours.

The key to Tottenham’s recent success is their manager Mauricio Porchettino, who joined the club prior to the commencement of the 2014/15 season. He has recorded steady improvement in his three campaigns to date, finishing fifth, third and second respectively, and he has most notably transformed young talents like Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Kyle Walker into genuine world-class players.

Of all the teams in the top six from last season, Tottenham were arguably the weakest on paper. Their second-place finish shows off the management credentials of Porchettino, and the Spaniard can really build a legacy at the club if he continues on the same path.

Although Spurs have been performing admirably, they will again be up against it when they enter the 2017/18 season simply because of the strength of their great rivals. The top six (or even top seven if we include Everton, who have made great signings this summer) are all looking more formidable than ever and it will be a real challenge to keep pace.

Bet365.com rate Tottenham Hotspur as the fourth most likely team to win the English Premier League this season, behind favourites Manchester City, giants Manchester United and last season’s winners Chelsea. Seeing them ahead of Arsenal in the betting odds is a sight for Spurs fans, but if they really want to pursue glory they must focus on challenging themselves rather than comparing themselves to the Gunners.

Spurs have a genuine chance this season, and at odds of around +900 they represent decent value. I cannot see them shortening too much in the first month of the season, so if you were to hold off there is a good chance you could pick up a better price, but they are indeed worth a punt before a ball has been kicked.

Tottenham Schedule For 2017/18

Spurs 2016/17 season was impressive, suffering just four losses throughout the entire campaign and managing to defeat all of their top-seven rivals (with the exception of Liverpool) at least once. Their success at home was the driving factor behind their league success – they obtained 53 points out of a maximum 57 in home fixtures, with Liverpool and Leicester City the only sides to come to White Hart Lane and earn a point.

But 2017 sees the end of an era as White Hart Lane is demolished and rebuilt, and Tottenham will play all fixtures at Wembley for the upcoming season. This has caused a moderate amount of anxiety throughout the supporter base – Tottenham’s record at the venue is nowhere near on par with the fortress-like White Hart Lane.

Spurs played all of their European fixtures at the ground last season and won just one from four, losing to Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco in their unsuccessful Champions League campaign and failing to defeat Belgian side Gent in their sole Europa League appearance that saw them eliminated on aggregate. Spurs also lost to Chelsea at Wembley in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, further adding to their Wembley woes.

Fans of the club will really need to embrace Wembley and get behind their team. One only needs to look at West Ham’s dismal transition into the London Olympic Stadium from their spiritual home at Upton Park to see how it could unfold for Tottenham; a positive attitude and careful player management is the key to a change like this. It would be catastrophic for Spurs’ form to dive simply because of a change in scenery.

Tottenham fans won’t need to worry about league performances at Wembley until the second round of the Premier League – their season gets underway at St. James’ Park to face promoted Newcastle United. Rafa Benitez’s side will be up for it in front of an always boisterous home crowd on Tyneside, and this will be a major first-up test for Spurs. This match kicks off at 1:30pm GMT on Sunday, July 13th.

Their second opponent of the season is none other than title-holders and London rivals Chelsea, and this match could and should attract a capacity crowd to Wembley. There is always plenty to get excited about when these sides meet and you can catch this one from 4:00pm GMT on Sunday, July 20th. Spurs then return to Wembley the following Sunday to take on Burnley at the same time, before the first International break of the season.

Aside from facing Chelsea, Tottenham have a relatively easy opening eight fixtures. The key as always will be to manage a hectic schedule in which they will have six Champions League fixtures in addition to their Premier League commitments. Spurs failed to make an impact in Europe last season, so it will be interesting to see how they fare.

Don’t forget that you will be able to bet on every Spurs fixture throughout the season, and we provide you with a variety of fantastic sportsbooks who each offer great odds and lines. Stay tuned for match previews, predictions and our pick of the best offers from the betting community.

Tottenham Probable Lineup

While the season is still weeks away, Spurs have already made quite a statement in the transfer window – that is, if you consider making no signings a statement. Unlike the majority of their rivals, Tottenham’s only action this summer has been the departure of Kyle Walker to Manchester City for an outrageous £53 million – the highest price paid for a defender in history. This is a great piece of business by the club and will allow Porchettino to invest in some decent recruits.

Although Tottenham may still fall outside the bracket of top-European clubs, and therefore continue to sell players like Walker (and potentially Alli should Barcelona’s interest turn into a purchase), they have managed to find more than suitable replacements – a real trademark of Porchettino’s reign at the club. In Kieran Trippier they have arguably a better prospect at right-back, so Spurs fans should not be worried.

It is difficult to see top players like Eric Dier (who has shown interest in a move to Manchester United), Harry Kane and Dele Alli leaving the club when there is so much to gain at Tottenham. They are on the cusp of league success and one can only imagine the accolades and celebrations in North London if they manage to finally win a title after such a long time.

The club is playing Champions League football, has a phenomenal supporter-base and has a top-class manager. While top players are spoilt for choice these days, especially in the Premier League where there are a number of fantastic clubs and managers, Tottenham is certainly a destination that is desirable and the club should have no problem recruiting additions to their squad.

Fans will be mostly happy with the current squad of players – they were the best offensive and defensive team in the league last season – although Harry Kane surely can’t continue to carry this team up front. The addition of a top class striker would really turn Spurs into title contenders. Chelsea have shown interest in Sergio Aguero, who is supposedly on the outter at Manchester City – imagine the scenes if Tottenham could pinch him!

Spurs are really building towards something amazing, and with the addition of a few more quality signings and a mostly injury-free season there is no telling how far they can go this season. One can sense that this is a great time to be a Spurs fan, so why not add to the excitement by placing an outright bet? If you’re lucky, you could be celebrating just as hard as the players at the end of the season. Good Luck!
