Toronto FC vs New England

My Team's Next MatchToronto

Toronto FC host the New England Revolution on Friday night at BMO Stadium and there is so much at stake for both sides. The Reds will be looking to hold on to top spot in the Eastern Conference rankings and reverse the recent result between the teams that ended in a 3-0 win to the Revolution.

Home form has been impressive all season for FC and despite this result they will be looking for a win. Meanwhile, NE should be full of confidence after their surprise victory against Toronto and will be hoping to find some consistency in a season that has to date been up and down. A win in this one could see them rise as high as fifth if results go their way, so there is plenty of incentive.

Toronto FC

Toronto’s 3-0 loss at the hands of the Revolution was definitely an anomaly in an otherwise extremely consistent season. It was just their second loss from sixteen starts and only the third time this season that the Reds have failed to hit the back of the net.

Furthermore, the loss marked the first occasion in 2017 that FC have conceded three or more goals. Toronto managed to reverse the result with a 2-0 home victory against bottom-placed DC United, so it will be interesting to see how the match against the Revolution plays out on their home turf.

You only need to look at Toronto FC’s for and against record this season to see just how successful they have been. They have conceded the least goals in the Eastern Conference (3rd best overall) and are the MLS leaders in goal difference, sitting at +13 after sixteen games played.

Their defensive record is even more impressive given the number of goals scored in the East compared to the West – at the time of writing there had been 44 more goals scored in the Eastern Conference. Offensively, they are just as good with the equal fourth best scoring rate in the league.

New England Revolution

New England currently sit in 8th place on the Eastern Conference ladder with a W-D-L record of 5-5-6. It has been an inconsistent season so far with just one instance of back to back wins from their first sixteen matches. The key statistic is the major difference between their home and away form – the Revolution are yet to win away from home and have not lost at Gillette Stadium.

This is something the side really needs to address in the second half of the season and they can start with an unlikely win at BMO Field.

The Revolution have not had any problems scoring goals this season – their tally of 27 goals has them sitting just four behind top scorers Atlanta and only one behind division leaders Toronto.

Unsurprisingly, there is a gulf between their numbers at home (19 goals scored) and away (8). Their defensive record of 23 goals conceded sees them around average for the league and is certainly not at crisis point, although they are yet to keep a clean sheet away from home from eight attempts.

MLS Soccer Picks This Week

Friday also sees the latest installment of the Texas Derby as the Houston Dynamo host FC Dallas. Both teams have got off to a great start this season and are sitting level on points with 24, just three short of Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City.

Houston have the equal-second best offensive record in the MLS this season while FC have the second best defensive record in the league, so this one should be an interesting clash. You can catch all the action from 9pm ET on Friday night.

There are another eight MLS games on this Saturday, June 24th including one of the biggest fixtures on the calendar – the Hudson River Derby between the two New York teams. The sides are only separated by four points in the standings although have contrasting offensive records this season – City have scored 29 goals while the Red Bulls have only hit the back of the net 17 times. It should make for a fascinating affair and you can watch this one from 1:30pm ET on Saturday.

Stanley Cup 2019 Odds: Tavares & Toronto Favorites?
Toronto will remember July 1st, 2018 not as Canada Day, but Tavares Day, after the pride of Mississauga was liberated from the New York Islanders. This stunning coup solidifies the Leafs top-line talent for the next half-decade, creating a long window of opportunity for Toronto’s long-suffering franchise. The Maple Leafs odds to win the Stanley Cup in 2019 jumped to +700 after the announcement, better than the Lightning, Bruins and Golden Knights. Toronto’s finally positioned as favorites to win their first ring since 1967, despite questions surrounding their blueline and goaltending.
