Leaf Report: Toronto Staved Off Elimination In Game 5, Can They Do It Again In Game 6?

Leaf Report: Toronto Staved Off Elimination In Game 5, Can They Do It Again In Game 6?
Although it was a nerve-wracking, hold on for dear life performance during the final 30 minutes of Game 5, Toronto managed to hold off Boston to get the 4-3 win and force a Game 6 back in Toronto. The Leafs will be looking for a similar performance in Game 6 as they try to force a Game 7 and kill off all those demons from 2013.

Can Toronto Stave Off Elimination Again?

Although the final 30 minutes in Game 5 weren’t pretty and nerve-wracking to the Nth degree if you are a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, Toronto ended up getting the job done and live to fight another day. That day comes on Monday night as Toronto will need to duplicate that result, but at least this time they are at home. The Leafs are going to look to bring the energy they had in Game 3 in this building to try and get off to a hot start again, and hopefully for their sake they won’t look to hold on for dear life late like they did in Game 5.

My Team's Next MatchToronto Maple Leafs

It’s not hard to say that Toronto got a little lucky in holding off the Bruins on Saturday night and they won’t be looking for luck back at home. In two of the last three games in this series it’s been Toronto who’s been the better team for long stretches of time early on in games and if they can duplicate that kind of success in Game 6, then this series will likely go the distance.

However, in order to make that happen the Leafs have to find a way to get that first goal. The common denominator in both of Toronto’s wins in this series has been that they’ve been the ones to get on the scoreboard first, forcing the Bruins to chase the game. Given that the team that scores first in this series is now a perfect 5-0 SU, the Leafs aren’t looking to take any chances in breaking that streak, and with the energy that will be in the building and all positive for Toronto, getting the first goal should be right up the Maple Leafs alley.

How Does Boston React To Missed Opportunity In Game 5?

The Boston Bruins absolutely owned Toronto in the 3rd period of Game 5 as they threw everything they had at the Leafs and just couldn’t find a way to get that tying goal. Now comes a Game 6 in hostile territory where the Bruins would obviously love to end this series, but knowing they’ve got a winner-take-all Game 7 in their own barn should things not go their way on Monday night does bring some level of comfort. Boston understands that they’ll likely have to weather an early storm from Toronto in Game 6 and it’s not something they’ve handled well in Toronto’s two “must-win” games (Games 3 and 5) already in this series. Something tells me Game 6 could end up being just as hard for the Bruins to manage.

Betting Game 6 of This Series? Consider This:

Boston has been listed as a -125 road favourite at SportsInteraction for Game 6 and I’m not sure laying that chalk is the way to go. In the history of the NHL playoffs since they went to seven-game series’ in the first round, teams like Boston that held a 3-1 series lead only to lose Game 5 at home are historically 4-4 SU in Game 6 on the road in the first round of the playoffs. That 50% success rate is much lower than the 55.5% odds the -125 price tag suggests here.

Clearly those past games have nothing to do with the players involved in this Game 6, but ignoring history is something bettors often do at their own peril. Given the history these two teams have of going the distance in a series, and Toronto feeling quite confident again after they got out to a big lead early in Game 5, I’m only looking to invest in the home side on the ML here and am glad I’m getting some plus money to do so.

Odds to make the Super Bowl Final 2019
Last night the Los Angeles Chargers went from being the AFC's dark horse to being a legitimate threat to play in the Superbowl this February. By going into Kansas City and shocking the Chiefs with a gutsy last second, come from behind victory, they've given themselves a shot at the 1 seed but also shown that it doesn't matter if they're the 1 seed or not.
