Super Bowl 2018 Odds: Patriots Hunting For a Sixth Championship
New England Patriots Super Bowl 52 Opening Lines
Led by the G.O.A.T. Tom Brady, and back in familiar territory, New England enters Super Bowl LII as chalk to claim a record tying sixth Vince Lombardi trophy. A Patriots victory over Philadelphia would match the six titles claimed by Pittsburgh who won their sixth NFL Championship when the Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals during Super Bowl XLIII back in 2009. Here are the SB LII prices.

Falling in line across the board, at -5 (-110) ATS, New England rolls into Super Bowl LII as favorites. Dating back to their Super Bowl XXXVIII clash vs Carolina (2004) this is the seventh time the Patriots have been Super Bowl Sunday chalk. That includes SB XLIX vs Seattle (2015) when the Pats opened as -1 favorites prior to the closing line landing at EVEN. For as great as they’ve been, over the last 22 seasons, NEP has not rewarded their ATS backers very often as they own a 2-5-1 cover record.
Money line bettors haven’t faired much better as New England is 5-4 straight up on the brightest NFL stage. The Pats were S/U pups in their first three title fights – losing to Chicago 46-10 (1986) and 35-21 vs Green Bay (1997) before Brady took over and led their first Championship win as -14 dogs vs St. Louis in 2002. Since then, the Chowder Land lads are 4-2 S/U though their 17-14 SB XLII loss to the Giants as -440 ML chalk is a lasting gut punch for those of us on the wrong side.
With OVER holding a 5-4 edge – New England has been in some of the highest and lowest scoring Super Bowl battles. The 56 points scored in SB 20 and SB 31, plus the 62 total posted during SB 51 last season, are three of the 13 highest scoring contests in SB history. At the other end of the scale, 31 points in SB 42, plus the 37 and 38 scored in SB 36 and SB 46 rank as three of the 15 lowest scoring Championship matches. SB 39 (45) and SB 49 (52) are sandwiched in the middle.
Us Against The World: New England is always at their best with a chip on their shoulder.
Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are Key SB LII Factors
Although some may still debate that they are not the greatest quarterback and head coach dual in National Football League history, there are a vast amount of facts and statistics that back those who are on the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick bandwagon. Yours truly was in the former crowd, for the longest time suggesting that Joe Montana and Bill Walsh were the most dynamic dual, until the Patriots posted a 24-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles during Super Bowl 39 back in 2006.
That was the Pats second straight and third NFL Championship victory over four seasons. While not large margins, New England trailed in each of those contests and they won two of the matches with an Adam Vinatieri field goal on the final play of the game. Overall, twelve Super Bowl Sundays have ended with the last scoring play being the winning margin and New England has played in five of those – winning four of them. When down, it’s rarely wise to count Belichick/Brady squads out.
Belichick and Brady are 5-2 on Super Bowl Sunday and the final score in those contests is 169-157 in favor of New England. Notorious slow starters, some may be surprised to learn the Patriots didn’t post any first quarter points in those matches. Cranking things up, the Pats scored 69 points in the second frame before slowing down and posting just 23 third quarter points. Lethal late, Brady & Co have scored 77 points after the third quarter – including the first Super Bowl OT score (TD) last year.
In A Nutshell: Belichick is a Master game planner and Brady carries out the plans near flawlessly.
Key Patriots Players To Watch During Super Bowl 52
Having the luxury of a top coach and pivot combo isn’t enough to capture an NFL Championship. Buffalo is a bold example of that as Marv Levy and Jim “K-Gun” Kelly advanced to four straight Super Bowls (1991-94) but lost all of them. Levy guided the Bills to a 112-70 regular season record and Kelly tossed 237 TD’s in 160 of those matches. In a nutshell though, Buffalo losing those SB battles by a 139-73 combined count proves teams also need defense to bring home the hardware.
Defensive players have been stars in several New England SB wins. DB Ty Law set the pace in the Pats first title as his 47-yard pick six gave the Patriots a 7-3 lead in their SB 36 win over St. Louis. Holding the Panthers to 4 of 12 on third down attempts helped during SB 38 while three INT and four QB Donavan McNabb sacks were huge in SB 39. The defense wasn’t the problem in either loss to the Giants and Malcolm Butler’s MVP winning INT sealed the SB 49 deal vs the Seahawks.
A Master and Maestro conduct an eclectic offense and many players have excelled on the big stage. New England has scored 20 TD on offense during seven SB battles. Tom Brady has tossed 15 TD to 12 different players (2 RB 7 WR 2 TE 1 LB) with WR David Givens and Danny Amendola, plus LB Mike Vrabel having two TD catches each. James White, who had one pass and two rush TD’s during SB 51, leads four running backs that have gained eight yards while punching in five rushing scores.
Sum Of The Parts: New England is a well-oiled machine with a wealth of valuable moving parts.

Back The Patriots At Top Online Sportsbooks
Discussing New England’s success is incomplete without mentioning some key contributing factors. First, Robert Kraft is a cutting edge NFL Owner who has worked long and hard while meticulously building and maintaining this juggernaut. Tom Brady has helped create a massive Joshua Tree as many of his former coaches are scattered across the football landscape. Plus, a credit to their Front Office and Scouting Crew, the Patriots never rebuild – they simply reload and continuously pillage.
