Spinaway Stakes 2017 Predictions

Spinaway Stakes 2017 Predictions

Spinaway Stakes 2017

With a free ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on the line, the 2017 edition of the Grade 1 Spinaway seems to be an event where the quality of the top three contenders has frightened away the competition as just five runners will line up to contest the historic event at Saratoga. Oh well, quality over quantity has its advantages in a race that bettors will likely approach as a win bet selection or multirace exotics key between the top three runners on the morning line.

The unbeaten three-headed monster of Pure Silver (1/1), Separationofpowers (6/5) and Lady Ivanka (9/2) all seem to have bright futures ahead of them. Pure Silver, now 3 for 3 including a nine-length tally in the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes last out is the only runner in the field with more than a maiden victory to her credit. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Pure Silver has sped her way to three front-running victories with impressive Beyer Speed progression of 66, 78 and 88. She’s never been headed at any point-of-call and could overwhelm this field with sheer talent and experience.

Separationofpowers and Lady Ivanka were both first-out winners who recorded impressive Beyer Figures themselves – 86 for Separationofpowers and 81 for Lady Ivanka. The former won by over 11 lengths and the latter by 8. There are no chinks in the armor, just guesses as to how good each filly can be. For handicappers looking to take a solid stand in this race, the question of which filly might hold an edge is seemingly impossible to know, but many will side with the experience of Pure Silver.

The seven furlong test will be the furthest distance any of the five starters have traveled thus far into their careers. Like Pure Silver, Separationofpowers seems to be an early-speed horse. Breaking from the 1-hole in what could turn into a rider’s race, jockey Jose Ortiz will likely find himself contesting the early splits with the favorite.

That scenario could work in favor of Lady Ivanka who showed the ability to sit behind a swift pace in her debut before blasting away in the stretch of a five and a half furlong maiden race at Saratoga. Her bullet work on August 28 (fastest of 55 workers going four furlongs) suggests she may be ready to take another step forward. At something close to her 9/2 morning line, Lady Ivanka seems like a good value-based play. Obvious Two, a clearly overmatched shipper from Thistledown and Maya Malibu, a first-out winner at Delaware Park, round out the field.

Breeders’ Cup Qualifiers Update

Despite the difficulty east coast horses have had shipping to Breeders’ Cups held in California in recent years, the 2017 BC’ Juvenile could come down to a host of strong two year-old fillies who have raced at Saratoga. While it will be interesting to see what develops in the Spinaway, Dream It Is was extremely impressive winning the Grade 3 Schuylerville in July and is 3 for 3 to start her career. On the west coast, Spectator looked sharp winning the Grade 2 Sorrento at Del Mar August 5. She’s expected to start in the September 2 Del Mar Debutante aginst a very contentious field.

Handicappers looking for a jump on their Breeders’ Cup Handicapping should have a much clearer picture when it comes to serious contenders for the Juvenile Fillies at the evening’s conclusion of the 2017 Spinaway Stakes this Saturday.

Stanley Cup 2019 Odds: Tavares & Toronto Favorites?
Toronto will remember July 1st, 2018 not as Canada Day, but Tavares Day, after the pride of Mississauga was liberated from the New York Islanders. This stunning coup solidifies the Leafs top-line talent for the next half-decade, creating a long window of opportunity for Toronto’s long-suffering franchise. The Maple Leafs odds to win the Stanley Cup in 2019 jumped to +700 after the announcement, better than the Lightning, Bruins and Golden Knights. Toronto’s finally positioned as favorites to win their first ring since 1967, despite questions surrounding their blueline and goaltending.
