While some Champions League groups are done and dusted, Group F still has it all to play for. Dortmund who sit 2 points ahead of Real Madrid visit the Santiago Bernebeu and hope to escape as group winners.

When these two powerhouses met on Matchday 2 of the group stage they provided world football with a great match. 90 minutes of end to end action was capped off with a late equalizer by the home side and a 2-2 draw left us all wanting more. Those 2 away goals by Real Madrid should have put them in pole position to win the group. However, an inexplicable draw to Legia Warsaw has left them needing a win at home on the final matchday.

So how valuable is the first place for each of these sides?

Scenario Possible Matchups for Round of 16
Dortmund finishes 1st Arsenal, Manchester City, Sevilla, Porto
Dortmund finishes 2nd PSG, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Monaco, Leicester, Juventus
Madrid finishes 1st Porto, Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Arsenal
Madrid finishes 2nd PSG, Monaco, Leicester, Juventus

Regardless of where each of these teams finishes, there will be landmines that they both want to avoid. However, there is a more favorable spot for each side and that is where they currently sit. Call me crazy, but I think Real Madrid are fine with second place in Group F!

Real Madrid vs Dortmund Prediction : BET DRAW +290 at BODOG

In fact, a draw will satisfy both teams. Dortmund will desperately want to avoid the possibility of facing Barcelona or Atletico Madrid in the round of 16. Even Juventus and PSG are potential opponents making them favorites to draw an incredibly tough opponent if they come second.

Real, having won 2 of the last 3 Champions League titles, know they have nothing to prove and that finishing 1st or 2nd in the group stage is a mere footnote. This is a competition where luck can sometimes trump strategy. Last season they rode the luck of an easy draw all the way to final. And by finishing 2nd in the group they avoid the biggest possible hurdle they could face, Bayern Munich. I expect to see what in boxing terminology is called a “silent contract” play out between these two sides on Wednesday.

The Galacticos German Fetish

Real Madrid has carved a bloody path through Germany on route to winning 2 of the last 3 Europen titles. In 2015 they overcome a 2-0 deficit after the first leg to knock out the plucky Wolfsburg. The year prior they easily dealt with Schalke.

But by far the most impressive feat was Ancelotti’s 2013 version of Madrid with did the hat trick in the round of 16 over Schalke, then eliminated Dortmund in the quarterfinals before ultimately dismantling competition favorites and defending champions Bayern Munich, beating them 5-0 over 2 legs, including a 4-0 battering at the Allianz
