Odds to win the NFL Super Bowl 53: Patriots Still on Top

The long wait is over. The NFL season is officially underway. Starting off, the New England Patriots lead the pack as the favourites to win Super Bowl 53. Despite their loss to Philadelphia, the Pats' consistency coupled with a weak conference makes them likelier champions than the Eagles. But don't count out Philly and the other contenders for that matter. It's New England versus the NFC for it all.

Patriots are Still the Team to Beat

They may have lost the Super Bowl, but Vegas still believes the New England Patriots are the most likely Super Bowl 53 champions at +600 (courtesy of Sports Interaction). The Pats’ odds are helped by basically getting a free ticket to the playoffs thanks to playing in the horrendous AFC East.

Then there’s the AFC: a conference that is far inferior to the NFC. There are only two or three other teams in the conference who pose a serious threat to the Patriots and all of them haven’t beaten New England in the playoffs.

NFL Super Bowl Odds 2018: New England versus the NFC

The Patriots have one of their worst rosters this season. They lost plenty on defence, top receiver Julian Edelman is suspended, and Brady is 41. Yet they will probably still finish in the top-five in point-differential and make it to at least the AFC title game. The Pats have the AFC by the neck.

While some AFC teams like Pittsburgh and Jacksonville pose some threat, the Pats are a solid bet to make the Super Bowl. Them winning it entirely depends on who they face. And there is a slew of NFC contenders all with a different style of play. Yet the Pats can beat them all.

The NFC is a stacked conference with half of its representatives capable of winning the Super Bowl. But a handful separate themselves.

Philadelphia Eagles (+900)

Philadelphia Eagles

History isn’t on the Eagles’ side. No NFL team has repeated as Super Bowl champions since the Pats did it nearly 20 years ago. But there is little reason why the Eagles can’t do it again. They return with mostly the same roster intact and got slightly better with additions to the offence.

Carson Wentz will return from injury some time in November and if he can’t, Nick Foles is more than happy to lead this team again. Doug Pederson helped assemble a team that is stacked on both fronts with an offensive line that is nearly impregnable and a defence that is relentless. This team could be a dynasty in the making.

Los Angeles Rams (+900)

Los Angeles Rams

On paper, the Rams made the biggest improvements this offseason. They bolstered their explosive offence by adding Brandin Cooks then acquired major playmakers on defence with cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters and the Ndamukong Suh to pair with Aaron Donald to form the league’s most dangerous tackle combo.

But the Rams are still inexperienced and lost key coaches on offence. They also lack premier edge rushers and solid linebackers. They are a sexy pick to come out of the NFC West, but they also play in a rugged conference. If the Rams are to win, everything has to go right and it might still be too early for that.

Pittsburgh Steelers (+1100)

Pittsburgh Steelers

Next to the Patriots, the Steelers are the next viable team in the AFC. But since the Tom Brady era, the Steelers have barely beaten New England including two crushing playoff losses. If they are to get over the hump, they’ll have to prove they can get the best of Brady and Bellichick.

Though they are historically a dominant defensive team, the Steelers have become more of a prolific offence. The Steelers are good to score 30+ points each night. However, their defence isn’t what it used to be, especially after losing Ryan Shazier at linebacker. Until they can fix it, they are a shaky bet as a contender.

Minnesota Vikings (+850)

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings made some noise in the offseason by adding Kirk Cousins as their new quarterback. Already with one of the league’s best defences, Minnesota will look to their new signal caller to take their offence to a new level. They were badly outclassed by Philly in the NFC title game

Winnipeg has also barely beaten anyone in their conference, that being the last place Lions. At this point, they are more “pretenders” but they still have the solid players on both ends of the ball to make a run. It might take a quarterback or coaching chance to do it, but don’t count out the Bombers just yet.

NFL Odds: Divisional Races to Watch

The Super Bowl isn’t until January. There is plenty of football to be played and with that are division races worth following. While the Pats and Eagles have their respective divisions on lockdown, almost every other division is unpredictable. We could be witnessing new winners for up to five divisions.

Two divisions, in particular, are highly volatile and worth a gander, especially for risky bettors:

AFC South

Last season’s division winners are the slight favourites to repeat. And why not? The Jaguars have a tougher schedule and the Texans (+185), Titans (+500), and Colts (+600) may all have gotten healthier and better but the Jags have the continuity. Jacksonville’s stingy defence only got better and even with the pedestrian Blake Bortles at quarterback, they should roll to another division title.

NFC South

This is easily the best division in the NFL. The Saints (+140), Falcons (+220), and Panthers (+240) are all Super Bowl contenders while the Buccaneers (+500) have potential to be a sleeper. The popular picks are either the Saints or Falcons with their stacked offence and defence, but the Panthers are just as great if not better. Despite their inconsistency, they could steal this division.

Betting On NFL Football

Even with the presence of the CFL and NHL, the NFL is still a popular league in Canada. Canadians even travel south of the border to catch games and tune in religiously to TSN or CTV. And like their American neighbours, they avidly bet on the games. They check out these online sportsbooks for all their betting needs.
