NHL Week 9 Picks, Odds and Live Scores
Week 9 of the 2016-17 National Hockey League season is upon us. With four Monday night matchups in the books, we have another 47 contests left on the betting board. First up this week, we head into the Swamp for the Vancouver Canucks @ New Jersey Devils duel. A West Coast trip is next up as we predict the Carolina Hurricanes @ Los Angeles Kings contest prior to closing out the slate with a pick for the Colorado Avalanche @ Montreal Canadiens clash.

National Hockey League 2016-17 Week 9 Preview

Though not without some nail biting, our NHL Week 8 predictions produced a winning record as we went 2-1 last week and pushed our record to 11-5 overall. We cashed an OVER/UNDER ticket to begin the week as the Maple Leafs vs Oilers match ended with Toronto defeating Edmonton 4-2 in a contest that went OVER early in the third period. We followed that with a pure whiff when the New York Islanders rolled into Washington and shutout the Capitals by a 3-0 final count. We got lucky with our final selection as Pittsburgh scored four times in the third period, including a empty net goal late in the contest, as the Penguins posted a 5-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Looking to remain on a hot roll, here are our National Hockey League 2016-17 Week 9 previews and picks.

NHL Week 9 Predictions

Vancouver Canucks @ New Jersey Devils – Bet New Jersey (-165) ML at Bodog (New Jersey 3-2 Final)

NHL - Regular
Sunday 09 April
New Jersey Devils
Detroit Red Wings

Devils @ Red Wings

  Money Line

Prudential Center – Newark, New Jersey 7:00 PM ET Tuesday, December 6, 2016

We got lucky with the Penguins but that contest pales in comparison to the Miracle in Nashville on Saturday. New Jersey was down 4-1 heading into the third period, on the road in Tennessee, but the tenacious Devils scored three times on four shouts in the final frame to tie the Predators. Once in overtime, Michael Cammalleri scored on the Devils first shot to complete the miracle comeback. New Jersey is finally at full health and they have been sneaky good with a 7-4-3 recent record.

Vancouver begins a five-game eight-day east coast road trip tonight. The Canucks also last played on Saturday as they let a 2-0 lead slip away before posting a 3-2 shootout win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at home. Seemingly putting a dreadful 0-7-1 losing run behind them, the ‘Nucks have also been hot as they are 7-4-1 over their last twelve games. In the same position as the Devils are in the Metropolitan Division, Vancouver is seven points out of first place in the Pacific Division.

Starting Goaltender Update and Prediction: NJD G Cory Schneider (8-6-4 GAA 2.63) and VAN G Jacob Markstrom (6-3-2 GAA 2.45) start in goal tonight. Schneider is facing his old team but that is old news as this will be his sixth start and he is 2-1-2 (2.17 GAA) versus the Canucks. Markstrom is 1-4-0 with a 3.46 GAA during five matches against the Devils. New Jersey is the only team in the NHL that has not lost at home in regulation time as they are 7-0-2 in that dynamic at The Rock this season. We have a couple of teams trying to maintain a decent roll and that points to this being a close contest. The Devils are at home and they are healthier than Vancouver. Making a deal with the Devils, at the Bodog online sportsbook, we’re backing New Jersey with the -165 money line.

Devils Clip The Canucks: Apart from being a very rough and tumble affair, it was fight-night in the Swamp, the New Jersey vs Vancouver contest played out pretty much as we expected tonight. The Devils took a 1-0 lead, on a Taylor Hall goal in a penalty filled first period, despite the Canucks having a 10-8 shot advantage. Things opened as Daniel Sedin scored on the power play 1:10 into the second frame before New Jersey tickled the twine twice to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Henrik Sedin scored four minutes into the third period but the Devils went into trap mode and held the fort to earn a 3-2 victory. Though we took a serious look at the puck line here, we suppressed a need for greed and our record moves to 12-5 on the season. We’ll be back on Thursday (08/12/16) with our preview and prediction for the Los Angeles Kings vs Carolina Hurricanes contest.

Carolina Hurricanes @ Los Angeles Kings – Bet LA Kings -200 ML at SportsInteraction (Carolina 3-1 Final)

Staples Center Arena – Los Angeles, California 10:30 PM ET Thursday, December 8, 2016

Carolina let one slip away last night as they dropped a 6-5 decision to the Anaheim Ducks in a shootout. The Hurricanes let two-goal leads slip away three times as they were up 3-1, 4-2 and 5-3 in that contest. The last lead vanished with less than four minutes remaining in the match. Since posting a five-game winning streak, the Hurricanes gone 2-4-2 over their last eight games and the ‘Canes have fallen seven points back in the NHL Eastern Conference Wild Card race. Carolina is looking to win three in a row, in the second game of back-to-back battles, during an eight game run over the last 13 days. It will be a tall order against a rested and ready Los Angeles Kings Crew.

Despite being without their number one goaltender Jonathan Quick all season, Los Angeles is well within the Pacific Division playoff race. The Kings (13-10-2) are just four points out of first with lots of games in hand on the four teams they are chasing. Los Angeles enters this contest following three days rest as they last played on Saturday when they dropped a 5-4 SO decision to Montreal. The Kings were up by one goal three times in that contest. Stopping a four-game losing skid, Los Angeles is 6-1-1 over their last eight matches and they beat Carolina 3-0 in their lone home game against the Hurricanes last season. We expect Los Angeles will get physical early and often here.

Starting Goaltender Update and Prediction: Very late update on the starters tonight but CAR G Cam Ward (8-7-5 GAA 2.22) faces LAK G Jeff Zatkoff (1-3-0 GAA 3.04) in the goaltenders duel. After playing extra time last night, and getting out-hit 27-14 against the Ducks, Carolina is up against a Kings Crew that plays a very heavy style of hockey and we see that wearing on the ‘Canes in this contest. We were going to back off this game but, Carolina has not won at Staples Center Arena since 2005 so will take the LA Kings with the -200 money line posted at SportsInteraction.

Hurricanes Blow Past Kings: Trust your gut. That is what we should have done here as we had an uneasy feeling about Jeff Zatkoff starting in goal for Los Angeles. Carolina scored a goal in each period to take a 3-0 lead before the Kings broke Can Ward’s shutout bid late in the third. This was a lacklustre contest as scoring chances were hard to come by. The Kings outshot the Hurricanes by a 22-18 margin and out-hit the Canes by a 23-11 count. The loss drops our overall record to 12-6 and we will be back on Saturday (10/12/15) with our call on the Montreal vs Carolina match.

Colorado Avalanche @ Montreal Canadiens – Bet Montreal -210 Money Line at Bet365  (Montreal 10-1 Final)

Bell Centre Arena – Montreal, Quebec 7:00 PM ET Saturday, December 10, 2016

Snapping a six game winless streak, Colorado (10-14-1) is fresh off a 4-2 victory over the Bruins in Boston on Thursday night. The Avalanche, who are 10-0-1 in Beantown since 1999, scored four goals for just the second time over their last 21 contests. Prior to the win, Colorado posted a 0-5-1 mark and were outscored by a 24-13 margin. The ‘Lanche continue to struggle on offense as their 56 goals scored is tied with Buffalo for the lowest total in the league. Colorado posted a 6-1 win at the Bell Centre back on November 14, 2015, during their only visit to La Belle Province last season.

Montreal continues to lead the NHL with an 18-6-3 record but they have been inconsistent at best recently. Since their red-hot 13-1-1 season start, the Canadiens have cooled some as the Habs are just 5-5-2 during their last twelve games. Breaking a streak of eleven straight one-goal games, the Montreal offense came to life during a 5-2 win over New Jersey at home on Thursday. Les Habitant fired a season high 49 shots at Devils netminder Cory Schneider – their previous high as 43 during a 5-2 win over Arizona in October. Montreal lost both their matches versus Colorado last year.

Starting Goaltender Update and Prediction: COL G Calvin Pickard (5-2-1 GAA 2.39) faces MON G Carey Price (15-3-1 GAA 1.83) in the goaltender duel here. Pickard is making his second straight start after he stopped 29 of 31 shots during Colorado’s victory in Boston. Although a little shaky, giving up six goals on 51 shots during his last two starts, Price continues to carry the Canadiens. After they lost leading scorer Alex Galchenyuk (23 points) in their previous contest, the Habs five goals versus New Jersey is encouraging. While they receive the best medical care, there is flu bug going around in the Colorado clubhouse. Given Montreal’s huge run of one-goal games, we are backing the Canadians with the (-213) ML price posted on the NHL wagering board at Bet365.

Montreal Mauls Colorado: Despite being a well-earned victory, there are times when a winning prediction kinda feels like losing pick. That is the case tonight as we passed on the Canadiens vs Avalanche puck line odds and went with the straight up price at Bet365 instead. We saw signs of Montreal breaking out of their scoring slump and we knew Colorado wasn’t feeling 100% but we couldn’t pull the trigger on the Habs 10-1 blowout win over the ‘Lanche. Max Pacioretty led the Canadiens with four goals while the Avalanche scored their lone goal with 13 seconds left in the first period. As far as the Money Line vs Spread decision goes, picking spots to lay pucks is working out just fine for us. Our record is now 13-6 overall and $100 unit wagers convert to a $530.22 profit. If we changed all of our wins to puck line prices – that number drops to a $240.52 return. Stick with us, as we’ll be back with our NHL Week 10 picks, odds and LIVE scores early next week.

NHL Live Scores Week 9

Seven weeks into the 2016-17 National Hockey League season, the Montreal Canadiens continue to shine as the best team in hockey. Owners of the top spot overall, the Habs have 34 points which gives them a three point lead over the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers who have both played one more game than Montreal. St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Ottawa sit in a tie for third overall with 29 points. The Arizona Coyotes and New York Islanders are at the other end of the spectrum as they are tied in the NHL basement with just 18 points each. The Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabres are just outside the cellar as they as tied with 19 points.
