NHL Week 6 Picks, Odds and Live Scores
National Hockey League 2016-17 Week 6 Preview
Our NHL Week 5 predictions produced a 2-1 record as we pushed our season mark to 5-1 overall. We were wrong on Boston as they broke out of a 3 for 43 power play slump with three PP goals in their 4-0 win over Buffalo. Detroit and New York cashed tickets for us as they defeated Vancouver and Calgary respectively. Through five weeks, Montreal leads the Eastern Conference by two points over the Rangers and four over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Chicago owns the Western Conference top perch as the Blackhawks lead Edmonton by five points and they are six points clear of Winnipeg and San Jose. Arizona and Calgary are NHL cellar dwellers with ten and eleven points respectively.
NHL Week 6 Predictions
New York Rangers @ Vancouver Canucks: Bet on New York -1.5 (+155) Puck Line at Bodog (New York 7-2 Final)
Rogers Arena – Vancouver, British Columbia 10:00 PM ET Tuesday, November 15, 2016
After being embarrassed 5-3 by Vancouver at home a week ago, New York rolled through Alberta with a 4-1 win in Calgary on Saturday and a 3-1 victory in Edmonton Sunday. Over their last eleven games, the Blueshirts are 9-2 and they own a two-point lead in the Metropolitan Division over Pittsburgh. New York has covered tonight’s spread price during eleven of their twelve victories this season. We like the fact that the better team is looking for a measure of revenge in this contest.
High off their upset win at Madison Square Garden, Vancouver crashed in the Motor City as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Red Wings. After two days off, the Canucks were back at the Rogers Arena and they posted a 5-4 OT win against a heating up Dallas Stars crew. Vancouver trailed four times, by at least one goal, before tying it up with 1:40 left in the third. ‘Nucks C Markus Granlund ended it 1:27 into extra time. Vancouver has been battling hard but the Rangers are a step up.
Starting Goaltender Update and Prediction: VAN G Jacob Markstrom (4-2-1 GAA 2.23) faces NYR G Henrik Lundqvist (8-4-0 GAA 2.26) in the goaltending duel. Markstrom, the ‘Nucks backup netminder, registered the victory a week ago while “The King” came off the bench cold late in the third period and took the loss after he allowed two goals on six shots. Hank, more than anyone, is looking for revenge here. Although we normally don’t like to give pucks to the home team, we are laying the -1.5 (+155) puck line at Bodog and riding the red-hot Rangers. Bettors wanting a slightly “safer” route can confidently wager on the visitors with the (-165) money line price at Bodog.
Rangers Crush Canucks: Revenge is best served cold. That is true here as New York served up a heaping portion on the ice at Rogers Arena in Vancouver tonight. After a 5-3 loss at home a week ago, the Rangers returned the favour as they crushed the Canucks 7-2 in their barn tonight. The Canucks came out flying as they pounded 17 pucks at Henrik Lundqvist in the first period but The King held the fort and the Rangers scored late to take a 1-0 first period lead. The Blueshirts added two more goals in the second frame before the Canucks got on the board with 51 seconds left in the period. The floodgates opened as New York score twice in the first three minutes of the final frame to easily cover the spread. The Rangers win sends our NHL 2016-17 daily free pick record to 6-1 overall. We will be back with our Dallas Stars vs Colorado Avalanche prediction on Thursday.
Colorado Avalanche @ Dallas Stars: Bet Dallas Stars (-165) Money Line at SportsInteraction (Dallas 3-2 Final)
American Airlines Center – Dallas, Texas 8:30 PM ET Thursday, November 17, 2016
Off to a disappointing start, the Stars had a 13-4 record at this point last season, Dallas is 6-6-5 and sit fifth in the Central Division. Although they are eleventh overall with 45 goals for, keeping pucks out of their own net has been a problem for the Stars as Philadelphia (62) and Calgary (60) are the only teams that have allowed more goals than the 57 Dallas have given up. October was rough for Tyler Seguin & Co. as they opened on a 3-4-1 slide but, with a 3-2-4 recent record, they are starting to get back on track. Dallas has lost two in a row in OT to Vancouver (5-4) and New Jersey (2-1).
Offensively challenged, Colorado is 7-8-0 over their first fifteen games and currently own last place overall in the Central Division. Only Buffalo (1.88 GPG) and Vancouver (2.00 GPG) are scoring less than the Avalanche who are averaging 2.07 goals per game. Colorado is 3-5-0 in November but the ‘Lanche are coming off a 4-1 home win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. Rather surprising, Colorado is 9-1-1 during their last eleven games vs Dallas – including a 6-5 season opening home win back on October 15, 2016. The Avalanche outscored the Stars 45-32 during that winning run.
Starting Goaltender Update and Prediction: COL G Semyon Varlamov (4-7-0 GAA 3.01) faces DAL G Kari Lehtonen (3-4-3 GAA 3.18) in the netminder matchup tonight. Varlamov allowed five goals on 28 shots while Lehtonen came on in relief and gave up one goal on 13 shots in the first meeting between these teams this season. Both goaltenders have had their fair share of ups and downs so it is difficult to trust either of them in this contest. As such, pick the home team who own the better offense here. Back the Dallas Stars with the SportsInteraction (-165) money line.
Stars Survive Avalanche: Happy we avoided the SportsInteraction puck line, we moved our NHL 2016-17 season record to 7-1 after Dallas hung on for a 3-2 win over the Colorado tonight. The spread price looked good early on as the Stars scored three goals, including two on the power play, on just six first period shots. Colorado cut the lead to 3-1 halfway through the second period and then made it 3-2 with a quick goal 1:51 into the third frame. Kari Lehtonen was rock solid in net for Dallas as he stopped 34 of 36 shots. Despite seven power play opportunities, the Stars only fired 22 pucks on Semyon Varlamov who stopped 16 shots over the final two periods. We are watching the Washington vs Columbus Sunday contest – please check back on 20/11/16 for our game day call.
Columbus Blue Jackets vs Washington Capitals: Bet Washington (-200) ML at Bet365 (Columbus 3-2 Final)
Verizon Center – Washington, D.C. 10:00 PM ET Sunday, November 20, 2016
Columbus have won three in a row including a 2-1 OT home win vs the Capitals on Tuesday. The Blue Jackets tied the game halfway through the third period and then scored just 37 seconds into OT to seal the deal. Columbus have been overachievers this season as they are 9-4-2 and just one point out of a Wild Card playoff position with games in hand on the teams they are chasing. The Blue Jackets are last in the NHL with just 41 power play chances but they lead the league with a 29.3% scoring success rate. Columbus has earned 15 of 18 points over their last nine matches.
Washington is just as hot with an impressive 11-4-2 start to the season that includes an 8-2 record at home. Following their loss to in Columbus, the Capitals returned home and crushed Pittsburgh 7-1 on Wednesday prior to edging Detroit 1-0 on Friday. Washington has been average on offense with 46 goals for but rock solid on defense allowing just 37 goals against. Prior to their contest on Tuesday, the Capitals posted a 4-0-1 record versus the Blue Jackets and they outscored Columbus by a 21-13 count in those five matches. Alex Ovechkin & Co. remain a rung above the Ohio Crew.
Starting Goaltender Update and Prediction: CLB G Sergei Bobrovsky (9-4-1 GAA 2.20) faces WAS G Braden Holtby (9-3-1 GAA 1.91) in the goaltending battle in this matinee match. Bobrovsky has won three straight and seven of his last eight starts. The Capitals lost two in row with Philipp Grubauer in goal, including the loss to Columbus, but Holtby is back in his rightful place and he stopped 49 of 51 shots he faced during his last two starts. Given how well the Blue Jackets have been playing recently, we are hesitant to give up the puck line here. Instead, we are wagering on Washington with the (-200) ML posted on the NHL betting board at the Bet365 sportsbook.
Blue Jackets Bury Capitals Late: Results like this happen while betting on sports. Sometimes they land in your favour – sometimes they don’t. The latter was the case here as Washington blew a pair of one-goal leads and lost 3-2 to Columbus. That drops us to 7-2 on the season. Possibly due to the early start time, this was a defensive battle as the teams combined for just 43 total shots – including four each in the second period. The Capitals were up 1-0 after the first, and 2-1 after the second, before the Blue Jackets scored twice in the third period to bag the win. Columbus added two more goals to their impressive power play numbers – including the game winner with just 54 seconds left in the game. We will be back with a fresh batch of NHL 2016-17 Week 7 predictions on 21/11/16.
NHL Live Scores Week 6
With most teams having played one fifth of their season – a few things are clear. Montreal is off to another hot start as they own a 13-2-1 record through 16 games for a second straight season. This is where cracks started to appear last year but the Canadiens will be fine if All-World G Carey Price is healthy and in between the pipes. The 2016 Stanley Cup Champion Penguins, plus the Capitals, Rangers and Bruins, are all part of a very crowded race in the East. Chicago is still an elite NHL Crew and their Western Conference Championship wagering line at Bodog (+235) continues to shrink.
Bettors looking for a West Dog, in the Championship fight for Lord Stanley’s Mug, should consider the Dallas Stars +900 money line price on the Bodog NHL futures betting board. Trending south, the Calgary Flames, Arizona Coyotes, Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche may be out of the playoff race by American Thanksgiving – the first postseason mile marker.
