NHL Futures: Week 20 Odds Update

NHL Futures: Week 20 Odds Update
With the final fourth of the 2017-18 National Hockey League slate looming on the horizon - there are races going on in various segments across the NHL. Some teams are battling for top spot overall, others are fighting to make it to the Big Dance, while some are vying for the most balls in NHL Draft Lottery. Week 20, which begins on February 12, 2018, offers up a 51 match schedule.

Stanley Cup Championship Week 20 Contenders

Due to bookmakers being a little late refreshing their NHL Championship odds, the Week 20 action is already underway as the Monday night schedule was a light three-game affair. One of those contests was a confidence builder for Toronto as the Maple Leafs took down league leading Tampa Bay by a 4-3 count at the Air Canada Center. The Lightning (79 PTS) still own the NHL top perch but it’s a precarious lead as the gap from first to sixth place is six points. With games-in-hand Vegas (1) and Boston (2) are tied for second with 76 points while Nashville (2) is four back with 75 points.

Toronto, who are tied with St. Louis for most game played (58) and Winnipeg (56 GP) are tied with 73 points each. Those top six teams are showing no signs of slowing down as they are 41-14-5 over their last ten matches. Pittsburgh (7-2-1) and Dallas (7-3-0) have made up some ground recently as the next seven squads, which also includes the Blues, Capitals, Sharks, Wild and Flames, are now separated by five points. The Flyers, Kings and Ducks round out the top 16 as they are all tied 65 points apiece. Playoff bubble battles, with five plus teams, are still fantastic in both Conferences.

Heading Into Week 20: Admitting we were sucked in – Edmonton will not make the playoffs.

12/02/18 Eastern Conference Championship Odds Update

Continuing to cut into Tampa Bay’s East lead, ever so slightly, Boston has moved to within three points of the Lightning. Unkind to many “Pick A Winner/Loser” pool players, after they lost 4-2 to the Buffalo Sabres (16-30-10) last Saturday, the Bruins are 19-2-4 over their last 25 contests. The Lightning are 15-9-1 over that same period which means the Bruins banked 42 points while the Bolts bagged just 31 during that stretch. Toronto is 19 PTS clear of Florida in the Atlantic Division.

While we have written off our Stanley Cup and West title wagers on the Oilers, we were never too down on our Pittsburgh tickets which are surging back to life. Sid The Kid & Crew have earned 23 of a possible 30 points over their last 15 contests. The Penguins Cup and East Championship prices are now back to their Week 2 odds. Although not sure what they like, and the other top NHL bookmakers do not, Bet365 pushed the Flyers price from +1400 down to +950 week over week.

East Playoff Race: Goaltending is a concern for anyone taking an East title flyer on Philadelphia.

12/02/18 Western Conference Championship Odds Update

Making it look routine, Vegas is clearing every hurdle during their inaugural season. That said, the Golden Knights went 12-1-1 and then 7-5-2 during their last 28 matches. We’re not suggesting the Knights will totally melt in the Las Vegas spring sun as a 13-10-4 season close should lock up first in the Pacific Division. We do wonder if that will be enough to win the West though as Nashville has rolled to a 10-1-3 recent record as they continue to fend off Winnipeg in the Central Division.

Apart from the Vegas feel-good story, it’s difficult to find a team that has done more with less than the Jets. The Predators have played two less games but Winnipeg is just two points behind them. After splitting the first two games – the Preds and Jets still have three matches to play against each other this season. Teams in the Central Division currently occupy five of the eight West playoff positions. However, for the first time in a decade, the Chicago Blackhawks are not one of them.

West Playoff Race: Though playing well – We are still cautious about soaring with the Jets.
