NFL Thursday Night Picks Week 3

NFL Thursday Night Picks Week 3
Week three begins on Thursday, September 21st with an 8:25 PM EST kickoff between the San Francisco 49ers (0-2) and the Los Angeles Rams (1-1). This NFC West matchup has playoff implications for the Rams, who need to clean up against lesser teams to keep pace with the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals. San Francisco’s in the middle of a rebuild, presenting Los Angeles with the easiest target on their 2017 schedule.

NFL Thursday Night Football

After two games, the Los Angeles Rams lead the NFL in offensive production, scoring 66 points, including a 46-9 blowout win against the Indianapolis Colts. Rams secondary were responsible for a couple of pick sixes against the hapless Indy backup QB, boosting numbers for the squad.

Los Angeles were a play or two away from beating the Washington Redskins last week, while the San Francisco 49ers would’ve beaten the Seahawks if QB Brian Hoyer contributed anything whatsoever. Instead, Hoyer has yet to throw a TD this year, and the 49ers will need to rely on their rush to produce their first six-point score of the 2017 season.

Somehow, the San Francisco 49ers appear to be worse than their two-win squad the year before, and bettors should steer clear of taking risks on this franchise, which is doomed in 2017. The only reason the spread sits at three was the Rams losses against the 49ers last year.

L.A. appears ready to compete on a more consistent basis under new coach Sean McVay, and pivot Jared Goff looks like he’s progressed. Defending the rush is the only challenge, so bet on the Rams beating the spread. It’s tough to see San Francisco’s offense suddenly scoring in bundles, and the Rams probably won’t score much more than thirty, so feel free to bet under on a 39.5 total.

L.A. Rams at San Francisco 49ers Preview

Last year, the San Francisco 49ers earned their only pair of wins against the Rams – the first a 28-0 shutout on opening day, the second a one-point win in week 16. The 2017 Los Angeles Rams are more like the latter version of the team instead of the former. L.A. won’t get shutout again on Thursday night, and the 49ers are extremely unlikely to score twenty points. New coach Sean McVay looks like he’s getting the most out of his lineup, especially in the consistency department.

This displays the gradual improvement of the Rams, who have a genuine shot at winning an NFC West division title this year. The same can’t be said of the 49ers, who look like they’re regressing this year. In 2016, the 49ers were dead last in points allowed, and possessed the fifth worse offense in the NFL. Carlos Hyde appears to be the only consistent weapon, a threat to rush 100 yards each game. WR Pierre Garcon is limited because the QB can’t make use of Garcon’s speed and skill.

Los Angeles had the worst offense in the league last year, a problem which appears to be remedied this year. The Rams won’t finish with the league’s best offense, but they could end the year close to top ten in the category if Goff continues to emerge as a reliable starting pivot. The defense wasn’t good last year, finishing 23rd in points allowed, but the Rams secondary look like they’re ready to step up during the 2017 campaign.

Defending the run remains an issue for Los Angeles, as evidenced by the 229 rushing yards allowed in their loss to the Chiefs. There’s a good chance that the 49ers will call Carlos Hyde’s number more in week three than the previous two combined, attempting to decimate the Rams rush defense. Unfortunately for San Francisco, the Rams can divert more attention to attenuating the rush because they don’t need to worry about Hoyer at all.

The Rams locker room knows they lost twice to the worst team in the league last year, and should be ravenous for revenge. A solid win against the 49ers will edge Los Angeles closer to respectability.
