NFL Preseason Injuries Can Boost Your Team

Ryan Tannehill – Miami Dolphins – QB

Ryan Tannehill

Tannehill opted to avoid surgery to fix his knee during the offseason, after suffering a partially torn ACL against the Arizona Cardinals in week 14 of the 2017 season. Ryan wasn’t even playing in a contact situation when he landed badly on his left knee during a preseason practice.

Unfortunately for Miami, Tannehill now needs season-ending surgery for a torn ACL. He’ll be given enough time to recover, but the Dolphins should have fixed the knee the moment he was injured. Miami decided to recruit Jay Cutler out of retirement to lead the Dolphins to glory.

Considering the general lack of success Cutler experienced with the Chicago Bears, Miami might not look back on their choice wisely. Nonetheless, taking a chance on Cutler gives the team better odds to win, compared to an inexperienced pivot. Most teams don’t find QB solutions this quickly, so Miami should consider themselves fortunate given the circumstances.

Odell Beckham Jr. – New York Giants – WR

Odell Beckham Jr

During a preseason tune-up against the Cleveland Browns, Odell Beckham Jr. was popped in the leg with a helmet tackle from Briean Boddy-Calhoun. After hobbling off the field, cameras captured Odell collapsed in pain. The New York Giants held their breath until the diagnosis came in.

Turns out Beckham sprained his ankle, avoiding a serious injury. The recovery time depends on the severity, ranging from a week to as much as three months. Before the Giants debut against Dallas on Sunday night, Beckham is considered 50-50 to start. New York would be wise to ensure he fully recovers, but he’ll probably play considering the importance of the Giants week one matchup. Beckham’s a unique talent, so you should also remain patient if he doesn’t start against Dallas.

Spencer Ware – Kansas City Chiefs – RB

Spencer Ware

The clicking sound you heard as Kansas City beat up the Patriots on Thursday night was the NFL fantasy universe attempting to add rookie RB Kareem Hunt to their roster. Hunt set NFL records in his debut, rushing for 148 yards and receiving for 98 yards. He scored three touchdowns against the best defense of 2016, along with a record of 246 scrimmage yards.

Spencer Ware was supposed to be the starting RB for the 2016 Chiefs, but he injured his knee during a pre-season game against the Seattle Seahawks. Ware will spend the rest of the year recovering, and the Chiefs will figure out whether Hunt can contribute on a consistent basis. If you haven’t done so already, take a chance on Hunt, but don’t expect him to continue breaking records.

My Team's Next MatchKansas City Chiefs

Julian Edelman – New England Patriots – WR

Julian Edelman

The New England Patriots are uniquely situated to handle a huge loss like Julian Edelman, but that doesn’t mean his absence won’t be felt by Tom Brady and the Pats.

Trading for Brandin Cooks now looks like a genius move in hindsight, especially now that Danny Amendola’s sidelined with a concussion problem.

Drafting Cooks high isn’t a bad idea, but you might want to consider other Patriots receivers instead. If you need a tight end, Chris Hogan might end up being a superb option. He started the season slow, but the Patriots won’t experience another blowout again this season. With two top wide receivers sidelined, expect Hogan to get more targets.

My Team's Next MatchNew England Patriots

Carson Wentz – Philadelphia Eagles – QB

Carson Wentz

Wentz was absolutely walloped in the preseason during a match against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nobody bothered to block or impede linebacker Micah Awe, who launched himself into Wentz’s ribs at full speed. Carson crunched into the ground, and was slow to get back up because he suffered a hairline fracture of his ribs. This painful condition takes time to heal, impeding the natural throwing motion of a QB. Even worse, without time to heal, the ribs could end up snapping after another strong hit.

The Eagles are relatively deep at the quarterback position after welcoming Nick Foles back to the organization. This big QB should be able to fill in admirably for Wentz if necessary, but isn’t the future QB of the organization. Philadelphia should give Carson’s ribs the time to mend instead of rushing him back into play. Foles is competent enough to fill in for a game or two without destroying the Eagles chance of starting the regular season well.

Stanley Cup 2019 Odds: Tavares & Toronto Favorites?
Toronto will remember July 1st, 2018 not as Canada Day, but Tavares Day, after the pride of Mississauga was liberated from the New York Islanders. This stunning coup solidifies the Leafs top-line talent for the next half-decade, creating a long window of opportunity for Toronto’s long-suffering franchise. The Maple Leafs odds to win the Stanley Cup in 2019 jumped to +700 after the announcement, better than the Lightning, Bruins and Golden Knights. Toronto’s finally positioned as favorites to win their first ring since 1967, despite questions surrounding their blueline and goaltending.
