NBA Picks: Knicks at Raptors Point Spread
New York Knicks at Toronto Raptors Odds
Franchise futility continues for the New York Knickerbockers in the Phil Jackson era, which has witnessed notable controversies including a failed Princeton Offense, questionable free agent signings and a general disdain for modern aspects of the sport. This season, New York had a decent start, but quickly returned to classic Knicks form via injury and other personnel trouble. Toronto’s enjoying a stretch of three consecutive games against incompetent New York basketball franchises, giving them a bit of a breather after a tough holiday road trip.
After returning from a handful of missed games due to a knee injury, Patrick Patterson is a solid candidate to miss this afternoon’s matchup against the Knicks. If this was a playoff game he’d be lacing his high-tops for certain, but coach Casey should probably give Patrick rest during the dog days of the season, improving his fitness in the long run. Kristaps Porzingis, on the other hand, has made himself essential to the Knicks during his second year in the league. This phenom is dealing with a sore left Achilles over the past few games, and has been listed as questionable for this afternoon’s game. The Knicks will lose with or without Kristaps on the floor, but his presence would reduce the losing margin, making his absence an important factor for spreads and totals.
Knicks at Raptors Prediction
BET TORONTO RAPTORS (-526) at 5DIMES
During their last matchup, the Raptors beat the spread and pushed the total to over when they destroyed the Brooklyn Nets in the fourth quarter, systematically decimating any pretense of defensive effort on behalf of the Nets. Toronto continues to roll under the mid-range wizardry of DeMar DeRozan and the brilliant point play of Kyle Lowry. This Raptors backcourt is by far the best in franchise history, and among the top duos in the association, responsible for about half of Toronto’s points on a consistent basis.
The Knicks boast some impressive players, including Kristaps, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, Courtney Lee, Brandon Jennings and Joakim Noah. As many observers expected, these ballers haven’t really fit in well, especially the incoming free agents.
This has created one of the most porous defenses in the league, currently ranked in the bottom five by allowing 108.1 points per game. Considering the Raptors average third in scoring with 111.2 PPG, there’s a good chance Toronto will score 115 or more points. The projected total for this match hovers around 217, and Toronto only has a middling defense, making an over bet a less risky choice than wagering on under.
With Kristaps, the Knicks will lose even harder than they did the last time they played the Raptors. During their previous meeting, the Knicks were at full power and played well, but still lost by 11 points. Since the projected spread sits at 10 points, there’s no good reason to bet on the Knicks being able to keep this game within three possessions. Also, betting on any team which has recently lost to the Philadelphia 76ers should be strictly avoided.
NBA Picks Tonight | January 15, 2017
This Sunday’s schedule in the NBA features a serious blowout candidate, with the Houston Rockets facing the moribund New Jersey Nets. There’s little doubt that they’ll beat the over and the Rockets should completely blow up the spread. The Minnesota Timberwolves are listed as underdogs against the horrible Dallas Mavericks, and the Lakers are considered underdogs at home against the Detroit Pistons. These matches represent a pair of solid underdog wagering opportunities that feature a solid payout with acceptable risk.
