There’s not a lot to be said about the performances of these two teams in the opening seven rounds of the 2017 MLS competition. Both sides are languishing at the foot of their respective conference ladders with only three other teams in the league compiling less than their seven points.

While one could argue that Montreal are doing slightly better having tied four of their games and only losing two, the reality is that neither side will be overly pleased with their tally to date.

Montreal have won just one fixture this season – a 2-1 victory over newcomers Atlanta which was surprising given United’s unexpectedly strong start to their first MLS campaign. The Canucks have fared slightly better as they’ve managed to beat Cascadia Cup rivals Seattle and the traditionally strong LA Galaxy so far (although to be fair the Galaxy have not exactly lit it up so far this season).

So how do you pick a winner from two teams that have just three between them from fourteen attempts? Historical context normally provides some sort of clarity, however not in this case! Since 2008, across all competitions, the two sides have met 27 times and the results are dead even. Both Montreal and Vancouver have won nine fixtures each, with nine ties making up the remainder.

Of the eighteen matches with a result, ten were won by the home team and eight by the away side, which really doesn’t give us much more of a clue. The last time the two sides met was over a year ago – Montreal won 3-2 in Vancouver.

The only thing to split the teams at the moment is the injury list – Vancouver currently have six noticeable absentees due to injury compared with the Impact’s three. This fact combined with home field advantage should be enough for Montreal to sneak home. I’m tipping a 2-1 victory.

Best MLS Picks Today – April 29, 2017

As always, there are a number of great fixtures this weekend in the MLS. Toronto FC kick off the round when they host Houston Dynamo at BMO field on Friday night. Toronto (2-4-1) had a great win last time out against an in-form Chicago Fire, and will be looking to build upon just their second win of the season. They will be up against it facing a Dynamo outfit that has four victories so far this season and are sitting third on the Western Conference table.

Houston’s two losses for the season both came on the road, and with Toronto yet to be conquered at BMO in 2017 I expect the Reds to take all three points in this one.

Toronto FC vs Houston Dynamo Odds MLS 2017

The match of the round is arguably the clash between FC Dallas and the Portland Timbers. Dallas remain the only side in the league to remain undefeated and this will be severely tested against a Portland side that has proven to be the early season benchmark in the Western Conference.

This game has so many subplots – most notably the fact that we will be seeing the top goal-scorers in the MLS (Portland), who have hit the back of the net 18 times already this season, going up against the joint-best defence in the competition (Dallas have only conceded three goals in six outings). Something has to give here, and given that FC Dallas have scored so few goals so far this season it’s looking likely that this will be a low-scoring affair.

I’m tipping Portland to be the first side in 2017 to beat FC and nab a 1-0 victory.

Stanley Cup 2019 Odds: Tavares & Toronto Favorites?
Toronto will remember July 1st, 2018 not as Canada Day, but Tavares Day, after the pride of Mississauga was liberated from the New York Islanders. This stunning coup solidifies the Leafs top-line talent for the next half-decade, creating a long window of opportunity for Toronto’s long-suffering franchise. The Maple Leafs odds to win the Stanley Cup in 2019 jumped to +700 after the announcement, better than the Lightning, Bruins and Golden Knights. Toronto’s finally positioned as favorites to win their first ring since 1967, despite questions surrounding their blueline and goaltending.
