My Team's Next MatchToronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays (8-17) start a 3 game set against the Yankees (15-8) on Monday night. The Jays are last place in the division, and 8 games back of the first place Orioles, who are tied with New York with 15 wins apiece. At 5-5 their last 10, Toronto’s going to need to manufacture that run they so desperately need if they want to reach midtable by the end of May.

Toronto’s got something to smile about at least. They got their first series win of the season on Sunday, beating Tampa Bay 3-1, with all 3 runs coming in the 8th inning.

Jose Bautista’s batting average is now a “stunning” .178 after the win. They’ll need their strong pitching to continue though if they want to get out of last place. Reaching the ALCS the last 2 years, not making the postseason this year would be a major disappointment.

Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson are still missing for the team with hamstring and calf injuries respectively, but the latter is expected back sooner than later.

For the New York Yankees, things have been looking up. Though coming off a loss, they had 2 important wins against Baltimore on Friday and Saturday, to tie them for first place in the AL East. Friday’s win was especially exciting, as they came back from 8 runs down to win in extra innings. Didi Gregorius was the star, as he went 7 for 15 over the weekend after making his debut on Friday. The Bronx Bombers are 14-4 in their last 18, and are having their best start since 2010.

Things haven’t been looking good for right hander Marco Estrada (0-1, 2.70 ERA). The Jays have just given him 13 runs in his 5 starts, and he’s only allowed 2 runs in 21 innings in his last 3 starts. He still doesn’t have his first win. In his 10 appearances against New York, 9 of which were starts, he’s 3-2, with a 3.75 ERA, and 2-0, with a 3.12 ERA in 4 starts against them last season.

The Yankees counter with right hander Luis Severino (2-1, 3.00 ERA). He’s been playing great as of late, recording 27 of his 33 strikeouts this season in his last 4 starts. In his last start, he held the Boston Red Sox to just 3 hits and no runs in 7 innings of work on Wednesday. Against the Jays though, his numbers are pretty lacking, with an 0-2 record, and 5.89 ERA in 5 appearances against them. In their last matchup, Severino was ejected for hitting Justin Smoak and Donaldson.

MLB Picks Today – May 1, 2017

The Yankee bats are on absolute fire right now, but Estrada is just the antidote for that. The Jays themselves don’t play well in NYC, but Estrada knows how to counter them. He’s a surprisingly perfect 4-0 in his last 4 road starts against the Yankees. What’s also surprising, is that Severino is only 2-6 in his last 8 home starts, and 4-12 in his last 16 starts altogether.

Estrada might look worse on paper, but Severino is due for a bad game, as he hasn’t had a good record of showing up the game after a quality start. Plus his numbers against the Jays specifically are telling. This line is definitely off, and there’s a ton of value in the Blue Jays at this price. Take the Toronto Blue Jays at +160 at Sports Interaction.
