Manchester United Odds To Win The Premier League in 2017-18

Manchester United Odds To Win The Premier League in 2017-18
The 2017/18 English Premier League season is almost here, and United will be once again one of the favourites to lift the trophy. Do they have what it takes? We preview their schedule, potential lineup and their odds of title success.

Man United Odds To Win The Premier League

When we’re talking about Manchester United, we’re talking about arguably the biggest club in world football, let alone the English Premier League, and their fan-base is one that reaches to all corners of the globe. The club is the most successful English side in terms of major trophies won; the Red Devils hold the most Premier League / First Division titles and the joint-highest FA Cup titles.

The greatest era in the club’s history is undoubtedly the 1990’s and 2000’s. In this period the club raised the Premier League trophy a staggering eleven times and won four FA Cups. The man at the helm throughout was Sir Alex Ferguson, arguably the greatest and most successful manager of all time. Ferguson led the side for 27 seasons, chalking up 1500 matches in charge.

The club finished in the top-three in every season of the Premier League era (established in the 1992/93 season) until the departure of Ferguson in 2013. Fans of the club have become accustomed to winning, and the last four Premier League seasons have come as a rude and unwelcome shock to the system. A club the size and stature of the Red Devils finishing in seventh, fourth, fifth and sixth respectively is unacceptable.

Enter Jose Mourinho. The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ has had plenty of success in his managerial career to date and has already won the Premier League title three times with Chelsea. Although finishing sixth during his first season in charge, Manchester United won the EFL Cup and the Europa League, the latter guaranteeing the club entry to the 2017/18 Champions League. A decent outcome and a solid foundation for the upcoming campaign.

Odds To Win The English Premier League in 2017 2018

Fans of the club have endured some stick from rival fans in the last four years, however there is a sense of cautious optimism floating around Old Trafford as the new season approaches. While Mourinho’s methods don’t necessarily produce attacking or flamboyant football, there is no doubt that he can produce results when required. With some solid squad improvements during the summer, United can definitely push for Premier League glory.

So what chance do Manchester United have in 2017/18? Bet365.com rate the club as second favourites behind rivals Manchester City and just ahead of Chelsea to lift the trophy, with daylight between the top three and fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur in terms of odds. An offering of +333 is probably a fair assessment, and although there are plenty of weeks in which United and their rivals can add to their squads there is little doubt United will be in the mix at the end of the season.

Manchester United Schedule For 2017/18

United’s 2016/17 campaign featured the longest unbeaten streak out of any club in the Premier League – a 25 match stretch that lasted just over six months. In spite of this, the club were never really in the race for the title, mostly owing to their ability to snatch draws from the jaws of victory. The Red Devils recorded fifteen draws throughout the season and this is one statistic they will need to address if they are to live up to the hype in 2017/18.

Jose Mourinho was a regular critic of the difficulties faced by English teams during the season, with teams having to play more or less twice a week for the majority of the year and sometimes more during the hectic Christmas schedule. Regardless of his opinions, Mourinho will need to be at his best to manage his squad as they will tackle the Champions League on top of the EPL this season.

Manchester United won’t have to worry too much about Europe’s elite club competition until his side have played in three Premier League matches, and this will provide an insight into how well United will fare over the course of the season. Mourinho’s men have a pretty straight forward start to the season, and it all begins at Old Trafford when they take on West Ham United on Sunday, August 13th at 4:00pm BST.

Following this fixture, United travel to the Liberty Stadium to take on Swansea, a team that they have only managed to beat twice in their last six attempts. This match kicks off at 12:30pm BST, Saturday August 19th. Their final match prior to the first International break is back at home against Leicester City, kicking off at 5:30pm BST on Saturday August 26th.

While there are few easy fixtures in the Premier League these days, United fans will have already penciled in certain fixtures on the calendar when the draw was first released last month. Below are two of Manchester United’s biggest fixtures in the opening eight rounds of the Premier League (note that matches are subject to change due to Cup and European commitments).

Manchester United vs Everton - Sunday September 17 @ 4:00pm - This one will be an absolute cracker. After starring for over a decade in the red of Manchester United, Wayne Rooney will return to Old Trafford wearing the blue of former club Everton and will likely receive a standing ovation by the home crowd. While he will be looking to get the win for the Merseyside club, former Evertonian Romelu Lukaku will also be facing up to his former club for the first time, and a goal from the big man certainly won’t be popular with the travelling fans.

Liverpool vs Manchester United - TBC – Weekend commencing Saturday October 14 – Manchester United were the only side in the top seven in 2017 that Liverpool failed to beat, managing two draws against Jurgen Klopp’s side. United will travel to Anfield and will again aim to tame one of the league’s best attacking outfits in one of the biggest derbies in world football.

Manchester United’s European campaign will kick off in the second week of September – fixtures for the group stage will be released after the qualifying rounds are completed, with all eyes on the draw to see which elite European clubs will be travelling to Old Trafford this season.

There will be fantastic odds available for every single Manchester United fixture throughout the season, and we will provide you with all the latest information and matchday previews right here.

Manchester United Probable Lineup

As Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in world football, they have unsurprisingly been linked to almost every big name player on the planet during the transfer window to date. While 95% of these transfer rumours never amount to anything, you can be sure that United will attract some superstars before the deadline on August 31 and for that reason it’s almost impossible to predict the lineup that Mourinho will put on the park in their first league match.

However one name is certain to appear on the match sheet – Romelu Lukaku. The former Everton striker proved how deadly he can be in front of goal with an absolutely stellar year for the Merseyside club, becoming the first player for the Toffees in thirty years to score 20 goals in the top flight. His record-breaking season saw him finish second behind Harry Kane in the 2016/17 Premier League top goalscoring statistic.

Lukaku is the perfect signing for United. In the four seasons since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, Manchester United have averaged just over 57 goals per campaign compared with just under 85 per season in the last four years of Ferguson’s career. United were heavily reliant on Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2016/17 and the injured striker is unlikely to feature this season. Goals are needed and Lukaku is a proven performer in the EPL.

United’s only other notable signing at the time of writing is former Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, who arrived courtesy of a £31 million fee. United’s defence was mostly solid last season and Lindelof will add class and depth to an already strong backline.

Fans will be hungry for more action in the transfer market over the coming weeks to bolster United’s squad, while they will also be looking for some of the club’s big names to step up in the upcoming season. Paul Pogba is one player that will be one of the first on the match sheet and will be looking to step up in 2017/18. He has the opportunity to dismiss the ‘overpriced’ tag and produce the performances he is definitely capable of.

United certainly have the squad and manager to compete with the other title favourites in the latest edition of the English Premier League, and should also progress to the knockout rounds of the Champions League. Jose Mourinho is a proven winner and will again look to get the edge over his peers both on and off the pitch, and if he can help United turn some of their draws into victories the club is certainly poised to lift the EPL trophy for the first time since 2013.
