Manchester City Odds To Win The Premier League in 2017-18

Manchester City Odds To Win The Premier League in 2017-18
With just weeks until the 2017/18 Premier League season kicks off, it's time to start thinking about who could go all the way and lift the trophy. We preview Manchester City's schedule, potential lineup and discuss their outright odds.

Man City Odds To Win The Premier League

Ranked sixth in 2016 by Forbes magazine in a list of the world’s most valuable clubs, Manchester City is certainly a force to be reckoned with. The club’s rise can be attributed to billionaire financial backers Abu Dhabi United Group, who have invested heavily in the team and helped fund one of the most expensive football teams in the world.

Money has brought trophies, European football and city pride for fans that have endured decades of disappointment since City were last successful, around the mid 1970’s. In fact, Manchester City sunk as low as the third tier of English football in 1998, so the turnaround in fortunes is quite remarkable. The Citizens’ recent success has been fittingly at the expense of local rivals United with the blue half of Manchester turning the tide on years of being the second-best team in the city.

Pep Guardiola, regarded as one of the world’s best managers, joined the club at the start of the 2016/17 season and will look to continue his success after fantastic spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. With a seemingly endless war chest to spend on players (breaking transfer records is just another day at the office for City), a talented manager and a squad that’s the envy of most teams in Europe, surely they are a certainty for the title in 2017/18?

Odds To Win The English Premier League in 2017 2018

Logic states that Manchester City will be too strong for their opposition in the upcoming season, and the leading sportsbooks agree, placing a firm favourite tag on the Citizens. Bet365.com has listed them at the incredibly short odds of +187, a decent margin ahead of nearest rivals Manchester United (+333) and Chelsea (+350) with daylight between the top three and the remaining challengers. But is it a good time to put your money on?

Placing your hard-earned on a favourite always produces the same arguments for and against the idea. On one hand, there is no doubt that Manchester City have the potential to dominate this edition of the English Premier League and be right in the mix come May next year. Conversely, the season is a long and arduous affair, and there are a number of challengers in the competition that could go on a good run and chase down City. Perhaps it is too early to make your decision?

My advice in this instance is to hold off on Manchester City until at least part of the season is played out. As favourites, City are unlikely to maintain their price unless they can conjure up consecutive wins and jump to an early lead in the campaign.

When you throw in Cup commitments, Champions League fixtures and the small matter of competing against teams like Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal, the odds are that another team will jump into favouritism at some time during the early months.

Manchester City Schedule For 2017/18

Widely regarded as the most challenging and competitive league in the world, the English Premier League is often seen as a final frontier for both players and managers. While we may never see a player like Lionel Messi risk his epic legacy at Barcelona and join an EPL team, Pep Guardiola has willingly put his reputation on the line and made the transition to England’s top flight.

Pep experienced great success in Spain with Barca and in Germany with Bayern Munich, and all were keen to see whether he would sink or swim in charge of a side in the Premier League with so many other great teams in contention.

It is fair to say that he didn’t live up to his own lofty expectations, and openly admitted that the Premier League was far tougher than he had ever imagined. Pep struggled with the hectic schedule, and City will be better this season with their manager now aware of what is required.

The 2016/17 campaign saw Manchester City jump out of the blocks with six straight victories and it looked like their title to lose, but by the end of the calendar year they had fallen well back as injuries, poor form and a challenging schedule both domestically and abroad derailed the campaign. It will be interesting to see if the team learns from this experience and can find away to maintain success throughout the season.

Manchester City will open their title challenge with a trip to the Amex Stadium to take on newly promoted Brighton and Hove Albion. Travelling to face Premier League newcomers in the opening rounds is always a challenge and there will be no room for error against a side that dominated the Championship for most of last season. This match kicks off at 5:30pm GMT, Saturday August 12th.

Following their opener, City will host Everton in what will be a real test for both teams. Everton have signed a host of new singings as they look to cash in on the sale of Romelu Lukaku, and Wayne Rooney’s arrival will certainly boost their chances. This match will be on a Monday night, starting at 8:00pm on August 21st. City’s last match before the first International break is away to Bournemouth on Saturday, August 26th.

Results / FixturesManchester City

If City are to repeat their dominant early form from last season they will need to be at their best as they run into both Liverpool and Chelsea in their opening seven fixtures. The Citizens took just one point from the twelve available against these fellow title challengers in 2016/17, and this is something the club will need to address if they are serious about winning the title.

Manchester City vs Liverpool – Saturday September 9th @ 12:30pm GMT – Liverpool travel to the Etihad Stadium for the first game after the International break and by then it will be over three years since Manchester City beat them in the Premier League. Their encounter last season was probably one of the most exciting games of any fixture with fantastic attacking football played by both teams, and this match could well follow suit.

Chelsea vs Manchester City – Saturday September 30th @ 5:30pm GMT – The reigning champions will be another stern test for the Citizens at Stamford Bridge and this match could prove crucial in the title race. With Sergio Aguero currently linked with a move to Chelsea, we may see the great striker in action against his former club. Watch this space.

As always, we will provide you with great odds from a selection of the top sportsbooks for each of Manchester City’s EPL fixtures. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to place a wager on your team.

Manchester City Probable Lineup

Manchester City has some serious talent and depth in their squad, and the prospect of reinforcements should make City fans salivate. Their roster runs so deep that Pep Guardiola could bid farewell to one of the league’s most prolific strikers, Sergio Aguero. He has already moved on a fantastic goalkeeper in Joe Hart (who has recently joined West Ham), and it remains to be seen if this movement will help or hinder their title challenge.

With so much of the off-season still to pan out, it isn’t easy to predict the lineup that will run out at Brighton for their first match of the season. One name that looks certain to be included is Kyle Walker, who recently became the most overpriced (sorry, expensive) defender in the game. Walker is a strong full back with a great engine, and will be a welcome addition to the squad.

My Team's Next MatchManchester City

When Pep Guardiola reflected on last season’s campaign, he was quick to admit that his side did not score enough goals in the Premier League. Home draws to sides like Middlesborough, Stoke City and Southampton dented his title hopes and while the squad posesses some fantastic attacking players like Kevin de Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, there is certainly scope for another striker to join the offensive line.

One name that has popped up is Alexis Sanchez, and this is a move that definitely makes sense. Sanchez has made it clear to Arsene Wenger and current club Arsenal that he wants to play regular Champions League football, and of course this will not be the case if he remains at the North London club. City can certainly offer the Chilean a chance to play against Europe’s best sides and are also a much greater chance at winning the title. This would be a sensational move!

Until the transfer window closes at the end of August, there’s really no telling who else may join the club for the upcoming season. Players can also dictate terms – look at Dani Alves who agreed terms before signing with Juventus and publicly stating he wanted to join a team that will win titles. Every single City fan is no doubt hoping for a chance to face the Italian giants in the Champions League and give Alves a piece of their minds.

Manchester City have a fantastic opportunity to win the English Premier League and will be tough to beat. If they can manage their squad efficiently through all competitions it looks to be a successful season, and certainly worth a wager.
