Jessamine Stakes 2018 Picks
Juvenile fillies grab the spotlight on Wednesday at Keeneland Race Course, where fourteen two-year-olds are expected to go to the gate for the running of the (G2) $200,000 Jessamine Stakes on the Keeneland turf. They'll be racing 1 1/16 miles in the final 'Win and You're In' race to qualify for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, set to go on November 2 at Churchill Downs.
In a wide-open race that offers a lot of race betting value, trainer Chad Brown’s Fierce Scarlett has been granted favored status by the Keeneland oddsmaker and is listed in the morning line odds at 7-2.
After running fourth in her career debut at Saratoga in August, she then shipped to Belmont Park to score her first lifetime win, going four wide in a big field on the Saratoga turf to win by a widening 4 1/2 lengths.
What’s most significant is that race was run at the Jessamine distance of 1 1/16 miles. In her two races so far Fierce Scarlett hasn’t displayed a lot of early speed out of the gate but a quick turn of foot once they head for home.
Expect jockey Irad Ortiz to ask her to settle off the pace and try to run down the field as they come off the turn and make a final dash for the wire.

English Filly Has Faced Tough Company
While there’s always some concern how a horse will run when coming over from Europe to make a first start on North American soil, Morovia (4-1 in the ML odds) has several things going in her favour as she does just that.
For one, she already has four starts on her resume, giving her an edge in experience over most of the others in the field. It took her three tries to get her first win over in Ireland, but from there she stepped up to stakes racing and stayed on very well to finish second by a length in her last outing at the Group 3 level.
The filly that beat Morovia last out has already come back to win two more which is always a significant handicapping angle.
The only stakes winner in the field, My Gal Betty (also 4-1 in the ML) has done all her running at Woodbine, where she has finished in the money in all four of her lifetime starts. She has improved her speed rating each time out and two starts back was an easy winner at six furlongs on the Woodbine turf.
Just over three weeks ago she made a strong rally from mid-pack to get up for second in the (G1) Natalma Stakes run at one mile, and the slight increase in distance here plays in her favour.
Speedy Solution Wants A Clean Trip
Quite often final results don’t tell the whole story of how a horse ran a race, and such is the case with Speedy Solution (10-1) who has had a troubled trip in both her two starts, but still managed a win in her second try racing 1 1/16 miles despite having to be steadied early and taking a bump late.
She’s worthy of consideration in exotic bets at a good price.
The Jessamine Stakes will be run on Wednesday, October 10 at Keeneland, with an expected post time of 4:24 PM Eastern.
