2018 First Lady Stakes

2018 First Lady Stakes

Fall is the best time of year to bet horses, and opening weekend at Keeneland is loaded with top-quality action as usual. The Grade 1 First Lady Stakes is just one of several highly-anticipated showdowns between elite racehorses as 10 fillies and mares will contest the one-mile turf event Sat, Oct. 6 at 4:40 EST.

This is a great betting race. Frankly, most of the runners in the field have a legitimate chance to win. Here’s a look at the runners:

  • 1-Insta Erma 20/1
  • 2-A Raving Beauty 3/1
  • 3-Quidura 3/1
  • 4-Crown Walk 4/1
  • 5-Indian Blessing 12/1
  • 6-One Liz 50/1
  • 7-Dona Bruja 6/1
  • 8-Valadorna 20/1
  • 9-La Sardane 15/1
  • 10-Off Limits 6/1

A closer look

Trainer Chad Brown owns American turf racing, and he will saddle three of the top contenders here in A Raving Beauty (3/1), Quidura (3/1), and Off Limits (6/1). The race runs through these contenders – a fact the race betting public will be keenly aware of.

While Brown’s trio should be plenty tough, I’m most interested in French invader Crown Walk, who has proven to be a top-class mare across the pond. She most recently finished second in the Group 1 Prix Rothschild in her native country, and trainer Henri-Alex Pantall surely has designs on running this one in the Breeders’ Cup Mile or Filly and Mare Turf next month at Churchill Downs.

When elite European turf horses show up in big races in the United States, bettors should always respect their chances. Given Brown’s stature and volume of contenders here, I think bettors may allow Crown Walk to be sent to post at surprisingly appealing odds – perhaps even greater than her 4/1 morning line.

Betting thoughts

Indian Blessing (12/1) represents excellent wagering value at anything close to that price. She wasn’t beaten all that much by Quidura in her last start, which also happened to be her first in North America. She never relaxed in that race and should be sitting on an improved peformance.

This race looks like the right time to play a trifecta. I’ll take Crown Walk on top and key the trio of Brown runners in the second and third positions, along with Dona Bruja and Indian Blessing.

My trifecta tickets will be as follows:

4/2,3,10,/5,7

4/5,7/2,3,10
