FIFA World Cup Golden Boot Odds Ahead of The Quarterfinals
FIFA World Cup Golden Boot Quarterfinals Update
The Golden Boot award is one of the FIFA World Cup’s most prestigious awards and is given to the top goalscorer of the tournament. Numerous legends like England’s Gary Lineker and Brazil’s Ronaldo have won. Currently with six goals, Englishman Harry Kane looks to become just the second player from his nation to win the award.
We give an update on the Golden Boot contenders complete with their goals entering the quarterfinals plus their betting odds on winning the trophy. All odds courtesy of Sports Interaction.
The Runaway Favourite
The magnificent Harry Edward Kane is all but guaranteed to win the prestigious Golden Boot thanks to five goals in the group stage including a hat trick against Panama.
The English striker may not score another goal and could still win the award as six has typically been the magic number for previous winners.
Additionally, Kane and England have solid odds to play at least two more games as they have the lightest schedule among the remaining teams playing Sweden then the winner of Croatia and Russia. They will only be favourites but Kane will get more opportunities to keep scoring.
Now is the time to bet on Kane as another goal would push his price to being unbettable.
Runners-up and Distant Seconds
Lukaku looked to be in a good spot to contend with Kane for the Golden Boot after the group stage but couldn’t muster a single goal in Belgium’s 3-2 comeback win over Japan.
Now playing Brazil, Lukaku will have two score at least twice and hope Kane never scores again to have a chance at the award.
Belgium will have to upset Brazil but still has the winner of Uruguay-France to deal with after. Brazil has been difficult to score against. They not only have an active defence but their relentless pressure is the best application of the phrase “a good defence is a strong offence”.
Lukaku can still pull off the astonishing feat but you’ll need more than 8-1 odds to put money on it.
Mbappe only has half the goals Kane has but France has a decent shot to make it all the way to the Finals. Adding at least three goals is not impossible though it’s improbable especially with other stars like Antoine Griezmann who could be doing the brunt of the scoring.
France is playing Uruguay next, a team that has only surrendered one goal throughout the whole tournament so far. Brazil is another team that is difficult to score against.
Mbappe has his work cut out for him. But going back to having many stars to play with, he’ll have more opportunities than some players. It’s not advisable to bet on Mbappe to win the Golden Boot but at 12-1, he’s a better bet than Lukaku at least.
Third-Placers and Longshots
It’s crazy how the best player remaining in the World Cup only has a pair of goals but that’s how stacked Brazil is. Neymar Jr.’s biggest opponents have been his own teammates. Philippine Coutinho has a pair of goals himself and Gabriel Jesus is bound to score at some point.
The balanced attack of Brazil has worked well for them as a team but not so much for Neymar Jr. Still, Brazil has the best odds of winning the World Cup and this gives Neymar Jr. up to three games to pile up goals. He’ll need to score multiple goals in at least one game.
It’s unlikely Neymar Jr. wins the Golden Boot even if Brazil wins the World Cup and he wins the Golden Ball (Best Player of the Tournament). But one hat trick can quickly change everything. If you’re waiting on Neymar Jr. to explode, now’s the time to put money on it.
Griezmann has little to no shot of winning the Golden Boot even if France wins the World Cup. There are so many other talented scorers on the team and Griezmann has been working primarily as a playmaker although don’t count him out entirely.
Even if France is playing tough defensive teams, Griezmann has the sublime skills to score at whim. Scoring at least a goal per game for the next three gives him five and that’s not taking into account if upsets happen and France plays a lesser team.
But this is playing devil’s advocate. Even at these inflated odds, there is no reason outside being a super fan to put money on Griezmann.
