Champions League Matchday 1 Soccer Predictions (2/2)
UCL Picks Wednesday – Matchday 1
The wait is finally over! European football returns with a bang as some of the biggest clubs in world football lock horns in the first week of the UEFA Champions League group stage. After our first round up for Tuesday games, we get into Matchday 1 “second half”. All of the fixtures are listed below followed by our in-depth analysis (odds courtesy of Bet365).
Group E – Liverpool vs Sevilla
Liverpool will get the chance to gain some revenge in this fixture against the team that defeated them in the Europa League final in 2016, setting back their Champions League aspirations in the process. Sevilla made the most of their admission to the 2016/17 competition, making it through the group stage, however fell to debutants Leicester City in the round of 16.
According to the leading sportsbooks, Liverpool are the heavy favourites here at a price of -134, however this is far too short for a team who are making their first appearance in the competition for a number of years and also a team that will come into the match off the back of a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City. While they easily dispatched Hoffenheim at Anfield less than a month ago, this will be a much more difficult task and Sevilla will be playing for the draw.
That is our pick, and you can get odds of +300.
Group G – Leipzig vs Monaco
Leipzig’s first ever Champions League match will be at home to last year’s semi-finalists Monaco, and while facing a team who made it to the last four would normally be a baptism of fire, this is a different team to the one that knocked out Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund last season.
Monaco have lost several of their best players, and although still a strong lineup will be within reach of the German side. Leipzig are actually slight favourites for this match at +125, which presents punters with a great opportunity as the French side is more likely to get the win.
Monaco’s European experience will count for more than most people think, and with Radamel Falcao in their lineup will still quite formidable. Odds of +225 are available for Monaco and this is probably one of the best bets of the round.
Group H – Tottenham vs Dortmund
This match is absolutely critical for Tottenham. There is no doubt that the club is currently in the middle of its best era in a number of decades, and the last step they need to take is to establish themselves in Europe. Spurs have been dealt a difficult group and will face the might of Real Madrid, so their matches against Dortmund will likely determine their fate.
Dortmund will travel to London full of confidence after a solid opening to the Bundesliga season which sees them top of the table after three rounds and yet to concede a goal. Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is once again in lethal form, having scored six goals in five appearances already this season, and will be the biggest threat for the Germans.
Tottenham will be without Dele Alli, who is suspended, and will need to rely on Harry Kane up front. They will also need to break their Wembley hoodoo and learn how to win at their temporary home ground if they are going to make any inroads in Europe this season. At +137, they are favourites here, but we prefer the away side at +210… Another great outsider bet for matchday 1.
