CFL Week 20 Predictions

CFL Week 20 Predictions
Kissing the 2016 CFL slate goodbye, with the playoff picture still partly cloudy, the Canadian Football League regular season ends this weekend. A last hurrah begins with Winnipeg visiting Ottawa at 7:00 PM ET on November 4, 2016. The weekend wraps up with triple-header action on Saturday as Hamilton hosts Montreal at 1:00 PM ET, and then Toronto is Edmonton at 4:00 PM ET prior to British Columbia hosting Saskatchewan at 7:00 PM ET on November 5, 2016. With playoff positioning on the line - let’s get to our CFL Week 20 predictions.

CFL Odds Week 20

While the postseason picture is fairly clear in the East Division – the race in the West Division is still ongoing. That’s because all we know for sure is that the Calgary Stampeders will be at home for the West Final in two weeks. Everything else is up for grabs in the West as the Lions, Blue Bombers and Eskimos are all fighting for home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Redblacks and Tiger-Cats have locked down first and second place in the East so they may be more concerned about staying healthy than they are about winning their matches this weekend. Furnished by the top ranked bookmakers at SportsInteraction and Bodog – here are the LIVE CFL odds for Week 20.

CFL Week 19 Wagering Recap

Our CFL Week 19 wagering recap is a mixed bag with a pair of wins and a couple of lopsided losses as we finished with a 2-2 mark. Our week began with a win as Edmonton erased a ten point first quarter deficit, by grabbing a 12-11 halftime lead, and never looked back during their 29-26 win in Hamilton as +2.5 underdogs. Who knew Winnipeg, posted as -5 point home chalk, would celebrate Halloween weekend by dressing as the 5-13 Blue Bombers from a year ago? Count us in the crowd that didn’t as the Bombers were ripped 23-10 by the Redblacks to saddle us with our first loss. We got back on track as the Lions (-3 home favourites) took control of second place in the West with a convincing 24-6 rout of the Roughriders in Vancouver. We closed out the week with a loss as Montreal handed Calgary their first defeat since Week One with a 17-8 home win as ten point pups. We lost some green while trying to navigate those big prices on the Red & White down the stretch. After playing three straight meaningless matches against playoff eliminated teams, that were all void of playoff implications, we are thankful we don’t have to deal with Calgary this week.

Week 20 CFL Predictions

Winnipeg Blue Bombers @ Ottawa Redblacks 2016 CFL Week 20 Prediction

TD Place Stadium 7:00 PM ET November 4, 2016

Blue Bombers? Stink Bombers is more apropos following the performance Winnipeg put up against Ottawa at Investors Group Field last weekend. Front-runners in the West, to claim second place and gain home field advantage in their CFL semi-final game next week, the Bombers were bashed 27-10 to finish the year with a dismal 4-5-0 home record. Maybe the Bombers (10-7-0) would rather open the playoffs on the road as a win over the Redblacks on Friday night will earn them a CFL best 7-2 CFL road record this year. Winnipeg has three possible playoff paths; 1) A victory, plus a BC loss, will clinch second place and Winnipeg would host the Lions next week. 2) If BC and Winnipeg both win the Bombers head to Vancouver. 3) A Blue Bombers loss, plus an Edmonton win, would move Winnipeg to the East as the cross-over crew and they will visit Hamilton next week. Ottawa (8-8-1) owns a first round playoff bye and, as such, many of their starters will sit this one out. Brock Jensen, who is fairly solid pivot, is making his first CFL start as QB Henry Burris and QB Trevor Harris will both be spectators tonight. Wanting to send a message to British Columbia, we expect a full effort from Winnipeg here and we are laying the -4 (-110) ATS price at Bodog to back the Bombers.

Montreal Alouettes @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats CFL 2016 Week 20 Prediction

Tim Hortons Field 1:00 PM ET November 5, 2016

In a contest that only a sports bettor could love, Montreal (6-11) heads to the Big Donut to close out their season against Hamilton who are playoff bound despite their brutal 7-10 record. With the Ottawa vs Winnipeg match still looming large at the time of writing, the Alouettes vs Tiger-Cats clash is the only meaningless CFL game this weekend. The Steel City Crew are locked into second place in the East and the clawless Cats will host either Winnipeg or Edmonton in the East Semi-final fight on Sunday, November 13, 2016. Montreal (6-11) has a lot of players auditioning for a spot on the Alouettes 2017 CFL roster – including QB Vernon Adams Jr. who has won his first two pro football starts. Adams led the Als to a 19-14 win in Saskatchewan two weeks ago and then helped hand the Stampeders their first loss since Week one during a 17-8 home win last week. This is another contest where all hand will be on deck for one team – not so much on the other side as Hamilton is expected to rest their highest profile players. There is some talk that Zach Collaros will get a few early reps but we don’t expect him to stay in this game long. We are taking the fairly generous +4 (-110) ATS price currently posted on the SportsInteraction CFL betting board.

Toronto Argonauts @ Edmonton Eskimos 2016 CFL Week 20 Prediction

Commonwealth Stadium 4:00 PM ET November 5, 2016

Following the Blue Bombers bashing the Redblacks 33-20 last night, the final score should’ve been worse, this contest has lost what little lustre it previously had. That’s because Winnipeg’s win makes Edmonton the crossover crew and they will head to Hamilton for a battle with the Tiger-Cats in the CFL East Semi-Final fight on November 13, 2016. How the Eskimos (9-8) manage their offense, in a now meaningless match, is debatable as QB Mike Reilly and WR Adarius Bowman are both close to setting Edmonton team records. Reilly is 110 passing yards short breaking the club record 5,663 yards Ricky Ray put up in 2008. Bowman is 52 yards short of setting a new Eskimos single-season receiving mark as he would move past the 1,812 yards hauled in by Brian Kelly back in 1983. We are of the opinion that neither player, plus RB John White and WR Derel Walker, should even dress as staying healthy for the playoffs far outweighs any personal gains. We wonder if the Boatmen can pull off a “win one for the Gipper” here. Following a brilliant 14-season CFL career, this may be the final game for QB Ricky Ray. After being traded to Toronto in 2012, and leading the Argonauts to victory during the 100th Grey Cup in his first season, Ray is back where he started his career back in 2002. Injuries have made Ray a shell of his former self, and the Argonauts are seriously lacking star power, but we expect Toronto will play their “best” players for the majority of this match. We’ll plug our nose and take Toronto with the +4 (-110) Bodog spread price here. Rare Caveat: Don’t put too much dough on this betting advice and follow the LIVE betting lines at Bodog in case there is an opportunity to get out of the wager if the Boatmen start to rapidly sink in Edmonton.

HALFTIME LIVE CFL BETTING UPDATE: Top online bookmakers, including Bodog, have opted out of offering LIVE betting on what has become an Edmonton rout. Coaches are wearing LIVE mics for this match so that’s a big factor. Personally, we feel the CFL needs to get rid of that gimmick as it is affecting LIVE wagering. Hopefully everyone just passed on this contest – or backed the home side second-string players over the visitor’s first team players. Someone bar the doors at Commonwealth Stadium as the Argos may try to sneak out the back way and board their bus during halftime.

Saskatchewan Roughriders @ British Columbia Lions CFL 2016 Week 20 Prediction

BC Place Stadium 7:00 PM ET November 5, 2016

Ottawa didn’t do BC any favours last night as the Redblacks sat most of their starters and then got wacked by Winnipeg at home. They did CFL fans a favour though as the final match of the 2016 CFL regular season has a major playoff implication tossed into the mix. A win by BC will earn the Lions home field advantage at BC Place in the West Semi-Final contest versus the Blue Bombers on November 13, 2016. A Leo’s loss means Winnipeg would host the afternoon game next Sunday at Investors Group Field. After a pair of losses to Winnipeg, BC has won two straight as they posted a 32-25 win at home against Edmonton in Week 18 and 24-6 victory on the road against these same Roughriders in Saskatchewan last Saturday. A season to forget is coming to a close for the ‘Riders (5-12) who have lost two in a row after they put together a mini four-game winning run. We are sort of surprised by the monster +15 (-110) point spread price at SportsInteraction. It is however understandable given what’s at stake for the Lions and the fact that Roughriders starting QB Kevin Durant will sit this one out. Getting burnt by some backdoor covers recently, we are reluctant to lay the line here but we don’t see the ‘Riders scoring much in this match. The Lions have scored at least 23 points in their last seven outings and they put up 32 or more points in five of those contests. We wil swallow the ugly -15 (-110) ATS odds at SportsInteraction and prowl with the Lions tonight.
