Canadian International and EP Taylor Stakes: Make Your Picks!

Canadian International and EP Taylor Stakes: Make Your Picks!
A pair of Grade 1 turf events head a solid racing card this Sunday at Woodbine, with large international fields entered for both the $1 million Pattison Canadian International and the $500,000 E.P. Taylor Stakes.

E.P. Taylor Stakes Preview

A full field of 13 filllies and mares aged three-and-up are set to test the 1 1/4 mile EP Taylor Stakes, led by 3-1 morning line favorite Best In The World. She comes in off a runner-up finish in a Group 2 event at the Curragh, following a Group 3 win prior to that at Cork. She’s one of four in here getting first-time lasix in her North American debut, and has the services of superstar jockey Ryan Moore. Well-traveled Kentucky bred Rainha Da Bateria is at 4-1 in the ML, following a win last out over the Woodbine turf, where she just held off multiple graded-stakes winner Dacita, with those two well clear of the field.

Another Euro shipper getting first-time lasix is Swiss Range (6-1) who will break from the inside post under jockey Joel Rosario. Although her two wins in five lifetime starts have both come at lower levels, she’s recently been knocking heads in the Group 1 ranks, leading last out into the last quarter mile in the (G1) Nassau Stakes at Goodwood in July in a race won by UK superstar Minding. She’s been off since then and should be ready to go here. Of the longer-priced entries, French-bred Nezwaah has been in the money in five of six lifetime starts, although she could do no better than fifith in her single Group 2 run.

Canadian International Preview

In the nine-horse, 1 1/2 mile Canadian International, all eyes will be on jockey Moore, who goes for his fourth straight win in the event. He’s in with a good shot on the ML favorite Idaho (5-2), yet another making his North American debut after in-the-money finishes in both the Irish Derby and the Epsom Derby. Last out he was comfortably leading the (G1) St. Leger before stumbling and losing his rider. Woodbine favorite son Mark Casse saddles World Approval (8-1), who can be expected to be setting the pace early.

He has a Grade 1 win to his credit already this season, but he’ll be stretching out past 1 1/4 miles for the first time. One who is sure to get the distance is perennial fan-favorite The Pizza Man (8-1) who comes in off a win in the (G1) Northern Dancer over the Woodbine turf one month ago. Royalty is represented in the race in the form of Dartmouth, who is owned by Queen Elizabeth II and trained by three-time International winner Sir Michael Stoute. He’s a solid contender at 7-2, with three wins, a second and a third in five starts in 2016.

Recommended Picks:

  • 1- #3 Idaho
  • 2- #5 Dartmouth
  • 3- #2 World Approval
  • 4- #9 Protectionist

Both races go Sunday, Oct. 16 from Woodbine. Post time for the EP Taylor is 4:56 PM Eastern, immediatley followed by the Pattison Canadian International at 5:40.
