Boxing Schedule 2017: Major Remaining Fights This Year

Boxing Schedule 2017: Major Remaining Fights This Year
With Mayweather-McGregor firmly in the rearview, the boxing world can finally focus on some legitimate boxing matches for the rest of 2017. While not every fight has household names or is even remotely competitive, each highlights some of the best talent boxing has to offer. A "superfight" between growing stars Gennady Golovkin (GGG) and Canelo immediately approaching, we take a look at a handful of other fights worth watching.

Next Boxing Fights in 2017

2017 has been a crazy year for boxing thus far. Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia put on a classic tilt at welterweight, Anthony Joshua knocked out and subsequently retired heavyweight legend Wladimir Klitschko, and Jeff Horn pulled off a huge upset against Manny Pacquiao. And this isn’t even touching upon the whale-sized spectacle that was Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor. With all this behind, there is still plenty of huge bouts left including the year’s biggest fight.

Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez

September 16, 2017 (HBO PPV)

THIS is boxing’s true “superfight”. Mayweather-McGregor may be the money fight, but boxing fans will unanimously agree this is the legitimate one. Golovkin and Canelo have been on a collision course for years and fans have long clamored for the two to meet. Following months of build-up and a “tune-up fights”, the two are finally just days away from locking horns.

Golovkin is 37-0 with 33 wins coming via T/KO. Before earning a decision over Daniel Jacobs early this year, Golovkin’s last decision victory came over nine years ago, a streak of 23 consecutive T/KOs. Despite not being as established as Canelo, Golovkin is the slight favourite due to his size, power, and durability. Canelo is 51-1-1 with his sole defeat coming against Mayweather. The Mexican has 34 T/KOs and will be the smaller but agiler fighter here.

Hughie Fury vs Joseph Parker

September 23, 2017 (ITV PPV)

Fury will be facing Parker for the WBO heavyweight title, which was once held by his cousin, Tyson following his upset over Wladimir Klitschko. Fury is only 22 and is 20-0 with 10 wins coming via T/KO. He has an unorthodox style, which can pose problems for the champion. Parker (23-0-18) won the vacant belt by defeating Andy Ruiz by majority decision. Parker has already talked smack and is training at David Haye’s gym. Parker claims he will knock out Fury and make a name for himself. Odds suggest it’s an even fight.

Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev

October 28, 2017 (TBD)

Joshua will put his WBA (super), IBF, and IBO heavyweight titles on the line against Pulev who is the biggest underdog here. Pulev only has one blemish on his record (25-1-13), which is a KO loss against Klitschko. The Bulgarian is a handful of medals as a super heavyweight but is outmatched here. Joshua will possess the speed, power, and skill advantage. The British phenom ousted Klitschko and looks to continue his unbeaten streak by polishing Pulev. A prop bet on Joshua to knock Pulev out is at -715.

Other Notable Boxing Matches

Billy Joe Saunders vs Willie Monroe Jr

September 16, 2017 (BOXNATION)

Overshadowed by the GGG-Canelo fight is a solid scrap between middleweights Saunders and Monroe Jr. Saunders is unbeaten with 24 wins to 12 TKOs while Monroe Jr. has a 21-2 record with 6 TKOs. Monroe Jr. has the skills to pull off an upset here but will have to really push the Englishman. Saunders who has wins over established talent like Andy Lee and Chris Eubank Jr. Saunders has value at -300 and a parlay bet with him and other faves could cash a decent check.

Liam Smith vs Liam Williams

October 28, 2017 (BOXNATION)

It’s the rematch to one of this year’s underrated scraps. Smith defeated Williams in the first bout via controversy as the fight was stopped due to a cut on Williams’ head. At the time of the stoppage, all three judges had him leading by a round and this immediate rematch was a no-brainer. Williams is 16-1-11 with the first bout being his only defeat. Smith is 25-1-1 with 14 T/KOs with his sole loss coming against Canelo. This rematch should produce another classic.
