Borussia young guns threaten to derail Bayern’s old guard in Bundesliga title chase
That could well be set to change this season after an explosive opening third of the season which has seen Dortmund, under the stewardship of Lucien Favre, storm ahead to the top of the pile, while Bayern huff and puff to try and keep pace. Rookie boss Niko Kovac has struggled to make the most of Bayern’s stellar squad, but the Munich giants look to be suffering from an ageing roster.
The downfall of Bayern Munich
Entering the new campaign, it was no surprise whatsoever to see Bayern at the shortest odds to retain their crown. All that has changed drastically over the last few weeks or so. Bayern have already lost on three occasions this season while winning a shade over half of their games – seven of 13. It is no secret as to their Achilles heel in the league, with the team conceding at a rate dangerously close to 1.5 goals per game – hardly the form of serial champions and it could well cost them dear.
This weekend, they host a struggling Nurnberg side and to describe it as a must-win game would be something of an understatement.
The reigning champions come in as the red hot favourites at -1200 and three points could move them up to second in the standings, depending on how other results go.
Bayern now sit fourth in the table, a huge nine points off the top of the table. As such, their odds on retaining their league title have lengthened to +137 and they find themselves in the unfamiliar position of not being the favourites for the Bundesliga win.

Borussia Dortmund is the favourite
That particular tag now belongs to Borussia Dortmund, and the numbers are quite simply hugely impressive. Favre is building a juggernaut of a side who have already beaten Bayern Munich and look capable of taking apart anyone on the domestic scene.
Borussia are now the only undefeated team remaining in the Bundesliga and have won 10 of their 13 outings this far. They are scoring goals at a ferocious rate of close to three per game, as well as boasting the second best defensive record in the division.
More importantly, they enjoy a four-point lead over Borussia Monchengladbach in second place, and are nine points ahead of Bayern. All that means Borussia re now the outright favourites to get their hands on the league title and are priced at just -150 to do so – given the way they have been playing, few would bet against them, and star Spanish striker Paco Alcácer, a loan arrival from Barcelona, is at +450 to finish the campaign with the Golden Boot award.
This weekend, Borussia face a potentially tricky trip away to Schalke, but their performances over recent weeks have bred an almost indomitable confidence in this group of players. They come in as +120 favourites to add yet another three points to their impressive tally.
