Far from the Happiest Place on Earth for the Flames, Calgary is trying to win a game in Anaheim for the first time since 2006. That’s an NHL record 27 straight losses as the Flames last win at the Duck Pond was during the first round of the 2006 playoffs. This is the second time in three years that Anaheim and Calgary are meeting in the playoffs. The Ducks won the season series by a 4-1 count.

Anaheim rolls into the playoffs as the NHL’s hottest team. The Ducks soared through the back end of their schedule as they finished on a 13-1-3 run. It has been over a month since the Ducks lost in regular time and the majority of the wins were thanks to defense, their physical play and timely goal scoring. Anaheim won their last four games including a pair of wins (4-3 and 3-1) against Calgary.

Rebuilding, reloading, reshuffling and refreshing have all been used to explain the hockey scene in Calgary. After their surprise playoff appearance two years ago, the Flames missed the Big Dance last year and opened the season with a +5000 Stanley Cup Championship futures price. This is a better team than the one from two years ago and Calgary will put up a valiant fight in this rivalry series.

Calgary vs Anaheim 2017 NHL Playoff Series Summary – Ducks Win 4-0

Anaheim completed a quarterfinal NHL playoff series sweep of the Flames with a 3-1 Game 4 victory in Calgary. Despite the scores appearing to be close – the Ducks looked like big cats toying with a little mouse as the young Flames were dominated in this series. While we feel we deserved a better fate, an empty netter in Game 1 or 2 would have been nice, our predictions on this series did turn a profit. After dropping 200 units during the first two matches, we stormed back in the final two contests to earn a 175 unit overall return. The Ducks now get some much needed rest as they wait for the winner of the San Jose vs Edmonton series that is currently tied at two wins apiece.

Calgary Flames 2017 Stanley Cup Futures

One has to wonder how the Fowler injury is going to affect Anaheim as he was their top scoring defenseman – by a country mile. That said, when you look up and down the Ducks line up you see a lot of playoff experience and a lot of top level players. During our look at the Flames Stanley Cup chances back on March 15, we placed a small wager on Calgary to win the Cup. That was before we knew the Ducks would be their opening round opponent = a futures betting pitfall.

Calgary has to win at least twice in Anaheim and the odds of that happening are not good. While anything can happen – we can’t recommend Calgary as a Cup contender at this point.
