Atletico Madrid vs Marseille Odds

My Team's Next MatchAtletico Madrid

It’s unsurprising to see Madrid enter this match as the favourite, although the extent to their favouritism exceeded our expectations. At -159, Atletico are almost unbackable in this match, while Marseille are huge outsiders at +471. The draw applies to the result at the end of 90 mins (regulation time) and is on offer for +269.

As the head to head market is so heavily skewed, you might be best looking at the other lines available. Our pick is the half-time/full-time line, which allows you to tip the results at the interval and after 90 mins. It is common to see a scoreless first-half in finals, so we would recommend the Draw – Atletico Madrid option that is available for +318.

Given that both teams boast excellent attacking outlets, we are also of the opinion that both teams will score. At +111, you can jump on the ‘both‘ option in the ‘which teams will score?‘ market.

Marseille

Marseille have so much to play for in this match. Given that they are no guarantee to qualify for the Champions League via Ligue 1, this is arguably the biggest match on the calendar for the team from southern France. What’s more, Marseille will also be chasing history – no French side has ever managed to win the Europa League / UEFA Cup.

Marseille will certainly have a small advantage – the final will be played in Lyon which is only a couple of hours up the road from their home base.

It’s no small feat reaching the Europa League final these days, considering just how many teams enter the competition. Here’s how Marseille managed it:

Road to the Final

  • Qualified in second place behind FC Red Bull Salzburg in Group I
  • Round of 32: def. Sporting Braga 4-0
  • Round of 16: def. Athletic Bilbao 5-2
  • Quarter Finals: def. RB Leipzig 5-3
  • Semi Finals: def. FC Red Bull Salzburg 3-2 (AET)

Star Player – Dimitri Payet

Payet is responsible for the most assists in the 2017-18 Europa League, and his ability has been on show for all to see. It’s no surprise that Marseille have averaged over four goals per tie in the knockout stages, and after only achieving four in total from their original six group stage matches, it’s clear that he has helped his team considerably in their efforts to make it this far.

Payet will need to be on his game – Atletico have only conceded four goals in their eight knockout stage matches.

Atletico Madrid

It’s been a long road for Atletico Madrid. After the disappointment of bowing out of the Champions League group stage behind Chelsea and Roma, the side has more than made amends in Europe by reaching the final of the second-tier competition.

Now that the winner of the final gets an automatic berth in the following season’s Champions League group stage, the competition is much more fierce and it’s been no easy feat for the Spanish club to make it this far.

Road to the Final

  • Entered the Round of 32 as third-place finishers from the Champions League.
  • Round of 32: def. FC København 5-1
  • Round of 16: def. Lokomotiv Moscow 8-1
  • Quarter Finals: def. Sporting Lisbon 2-1
  • Semi Finals: def. Arsenal 2-1

Star Player – Antoine Griezmann

It seems like there is always speculation surrounding the French ace, and once again there are questions about whether or not this will be the last time we see Griezmann in European competition for Atletico. There is little chance that the result will impact this decision – Atletico have already secured a Champions League place via La Liga, so not much will change (apart from a nice shiny trophy) for the star striker.

He will certainly be missed if he leaves – Griezmann was the difference in the tough tie against Arsenal, scoring in the 82nd minute of the away leg despite his team being down to ten men. He is a genuine game changer and as long as he is on the team sheet we are tipping an Atletico victory.

Europa League Final Predictions

This is an interesting one, because one team has a lot more to play for than the other, and it’s unclear whether ‘home’ advantage will make any difference to the match. There’s also the small matter of Madrid manager Diego Simeone being unable to stand on the sideline thanks to his recent UEFA ban, although this only appeared to galvanise his squad against Arsenal.

On paper, you would have to say Atletico is by far the stronger of the two teams. La Liga is the better of the two domestic leagues, and the fact that the Spaniards are on track to top UEFA Champions League finalists and city neighbours Real Madrid certainly speaks volumes.

Atletico also have more experience at this stage of European tournaments, so it is unlikely the French support in Lyon will be too much of a deterrent. This is a squad that managed a 1-1 draw at the Emirates despite playing almost the whole match with ten men.

We can’t go past the Spaniards here. 2-1 the final score.
