2018 Clark Handicap
The Clark appears to be a fairly pedestrian bunch this year for grade 1 standards, but I really like the looks of Seeking the Soul in this race. The 8/5 morning line favorite has kept better company than most of his rivals here, and recorded better speed figures. I’ll get into some more details on my top pick, but first let’s take a closer look at the field.
Meet the field
- Prime Attraction 3/1
- Hence 12/1
- Seeking the Soul 8/5
- Hawaakom 15/1
- Leofric 3/1
- Bravazo 9/2
- Storm Advisory 30/1
- Sightforsoreeyes 30/1
Prime Attraction, Leofric and Bravazo are nice horses, but they are a notch below Seeking the Soul in my opinon. Seeking the Soul has recorded five triple digit Beyer Speed Figures in his career, including a career-best 105 in his last start while finishing a good second to City of Light in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
Seeking the Soul won the Clark last year and should find the 1 1/8 mile trip more to his liking than the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Furthermore, Leofric and Prime Attraction could get quite contentious in the early stages of the race, setting things up for Seeking the Soul’s late kick. There’s just not enough quality here to lean another direction. I liked the big late kick Seeking the Soul showed while finishing second to the very well-regarded City of Light and I just think he’ll have two much for these.
Seeking the Soul is far from a betting cinch (those don’t exist), but he should win this race and might actually offer some betting value if permitted to go to post at his morning line price of 8/5.
How to bet the race
In the interest of reaping betting value, I’ll play an exacta wheel using Seeking the Soul over Prime Attraction, Leofric and Bravazo to look like this:
EXACTA: 3/156. For every $2 wager, this exacta wheel will cost $6. Nothing fancy here, just a good and logical bet.
