2018 Breeders Cup Classic

2018 Breeders Cup Classic

With Breeders' Cup 2018 bearing down on the betting public, the weeks leading up to the two-day event scheduled for November 2-3 at Churchill Downs in Louisville may be the most reasonable and opportune time to make a futures bet. Let's examine the Classic and the race betting odds being offered at our wagering partners and ferret out some value.

Accelerate +300 (bet $100 to win $300) is clearly the one to beat, but this price is far from appetizing - particularly when the horse figures to be available at, or around these odds on race day. It only makes sense to make a futures bet when the bettor is able to realize greater value by betting before race day.

Supreme wagering value should drive the bus any time we bet our money, but this is particularly true in the futures market.

Betting angles to consider

Once you get past Accelerate, this field opens up considerably. Quickly, let's consider the reasons to play against the favorite in this bet aside from the lack of wagering value.

Accelerate will be racing outside California for just the second time in his career. The last time he ventured away from the golden state resulted in his last loss - a second-place effort in the Grade 2 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park. Accelerate will also be racing over the Churchill Downs surface for the first time in his career.

I have my eye on a pair of contenders who offer plenty of intrigue and value: Thunder Snow and Yoshida. Thunder Snow ran second last out in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, but I get the feeling that wasn't close to his top effort - the likes of which we saw when he crushed his Dubai World Cup rivals in March.

Yoshida is a very interesting commodity as well. A career turf runner until winning his first and only start to date on dirt in the Woodward Stakes Sept.1 at Saratoga, Yoshida has plenty of license to improve off that effort.

While I haven't decided which horse I'll roll with yet, I'm leaning towards Yoshida due to his upside.
