Who doesn't love a good 7-furlong slugfest between topnotch horses? That's exactly what the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint provides in addition to returning some generous prices such as 2017 winner Bar of Gold's $135.40 payout for every $2 wagered. I'm not sure we can catch that kind of lightening in a bottle this year, but the future bets do look juicy.
2018 Australian Open Odds: Fourth Round Best Value Picks
Australian Open Third Round Recap
Most of the women’s seeds survived the third round, although it was not easy going. Top seed Simona Halep dropped the opening set to American Lauren Davis, before coming back to win in a titanic struggle, eventually getting over the line in a 15 games to 13 in a marathon third set. Halep will face Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the fourth round – she ended the hopes of the last remaining home player in her defeat of Ashleigh Barty.
Second seed Caroline Wozniacki continued her impressive run with a straight sets victory over Kiki Bertens, while fourth seed Elina Svitolina took care of compatriot Marta Kostyuk in a 6-2, 6-2 drubbing. Victories to Karolina Pliskova and Caroline Garcia means that five of the top eight seeds remain in the draw.
Angelique Kerber also continues to impress, and she put an end to Maria Sharapova’s Open dream in an emphatic 6-1,6-3 win. Although seeded 21st, she is definitely on track to register another grand slam victory.
Over in the men’s draw, the top six all remain in the hunt as they progressed without major incident. Rafael Nadal took just under two hours to defeat Bosnian Damir Dzumhur in straight sets, while Roger Federer also eased to a three set victory in his match against Jan-Lennard Struff. Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev both needed four sets to progress, as did fourteenth seed Novak Djokovic.
The top casualties were seventh seed David Goffin, who lost in four sets to Frenchman Julien Benneteau despite winning the first 6-1, ninth seed Stan Warwinka, who lost badly in straight sets, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who was bundled out by an impressive Nick Kyrgios.
England’s best chance Kyle Edmund took five sets to overcome Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili, while it was back to back five set epics for fifth seed Dominic Thiem, who has now come back from two sets down on consecutive occasions.
The fourth round is played on Sunday, January 21st and Monday, January 22nd. Once again there are several key matchups to look forward to, and below we take a look at the top fixtures, followed by our predictions and more betting tips to help you win big at the Australian Open.
Men’s Tournament Fourth Round Singles Picks
Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic will face unseeded players, meaning they will once again be at short odds, while the match between Italian Fabio Fognini and Tomas Berdych is one of the few where both players are a genuine chance. Below are the matches that offer the most valuable odds:Fabio Fognini (25) vs Tomas Berdych (19) Berdych @ -286
Berdych’s display against Juan Martin del Potro was brilliant, and shows he can more than handle the heat at the Australian Open. In what we expected to be a five set thriller was over in quick time, as the Czech star won comfortably despite being the slight outsider. He is the heavy favourite here, owing to both rank and the fact that he has played far less minutes than his Italian opponent, and we are sticking with him to make it to the quarters.Novak Djokovic (14) vs Hyeon Chung Djokovic @ -453
While Djokovic is yet to return to his best, there is little doubt that he will progress in this match, which makes the odds of -453 on offer surprisingly good value. If you compare it with say Roger Federer, who is at -4902 in his match (no that is not a typo), this is an easy win and one that would go great as a parlay into either of the above two picks.
Women’s Tournament Fourth Round Singles Picks
While many big names went out early, the reality is that we’ve still got plenty of talent left in the women’s draw. Most of the top seeds remain, while outsiders like Kerber and Madison Keys are well in with a chance of lifting this year’s trophy. Below are the pick of the eight fourth round matches.Madison Keys (17) vs Caroline Garcia (8) Keys @ -179
It hasn’t been a great tournament for American fans, with many of their best chances heading out early. Madison Keys remains, and has been performing well, enough for Sports Interaction to list her as favourite against eighth seed Caroline Garcia. The top French chance in the women’s draw has ben taken to three sets twice already, and her form coming into the event has not been overly impressive. We like Keys here, and the odds are great value.Simona Halep vs Naomi Osaka Halep @ -188
This is the first time we’ve seen Halep at odds less than -1000, owing mainly to Osaka’s dominant win over Australian Ashleigh Barty in the third round. The Japanese star is playing extremely well at present, although Halep is number one seed for a reason and will still have the upper hand here. She is offering great odds for the win here.
More Betting Tips
Don’t forget that you can also pick the number of sets required for victory in all Australian Open matches. We have successfully picked Simona Halep would win in straight sets on two occasions, and there is no reason why she shouldn’t do so again (you would get a price of +106 for her to do so). While one of the other top players may not be worthwhile betting on because of their overwhelming superiority and low return potential, taking on the number of sets may be a useful pick.
There are more options available in the mens draw as they play five sets, although it’s not uncommon for women’s matches to go to three sets even when the top seeds are involved.
You could also try your luck by checking out the over/under market. This is much more difficult to predict, and as such the reward is much greater. Your options may include betting on the total number of games in a set or total number of games in a match, which again is easier if you are watching the match and betting live.
There will always be the option of betting on the exact score of a set. This is actually not as difficult as it sounds as there are only a handful of different possibilities, so why not have a punt on this in the next match you put your money on. Betting on the Australian Open is easier than ever, and with so many Canadian-friendly sportsbooks vying for your betting cash there are always a number of exciting deals on the table.
Make sure you explore our sportsbook partners and check out all of the different options available. As always, you can also join in the discussion on our facebook page to connect with other bettors and convey your thoughts on this year’s likely winner.
