2017 Preakness Stakes Best Bets

2017 Preakness Stakes Best Bets
With the 2017 Preakness set to run at approximately 6:45 PM EST Saturday, May 20 at Pimlico, it's time to get serious about handicapping the race and turning opinions into dollars. Here's a look at our best bets and how to capitalize on them wagering online.

Best Bets For Preakness

Anyone who’s ever spent a day at the races knows there are basically two kinds of bettors: those willing to play the favorite and those always looking for a bigger price. In reality, betting success requires a combination of these two prevalent mindsets.

Throwing out the most logical horses simply because a player is dreaming about cashing a large ticket doesn’t make any sense. The 2017 Preakness doesn’t look like a race where it’s wise to look much beyond the top two contenders – Always Dreaming and Classic Empire – on the win end.

With this in mind, betting the Preakness can still be a very profitable proposition for players looking to create wagering value through exotic bets. For our money, Gunnevera, Hence, Looking at Lee, and Conquest Mo Money are four horses to key “underneath” in wagers like the trifecta and superfecta, while using Always Dreaming and Classic Empire “on top” of those bets. We also can’t blame bettors who see even less grey area and choose to key Always Dreaming on top.

Here’s a couple of different ways to play a bet like the trifecta depending on strategy and bankroll:

Option A: Conservative Spread Approach

1st Position: Classic Empire & Always Dreaming

2nd Position: Classic Empire, Always Dreaming, Gunnevera, Conquest Mo Money, Hence, Looking at Lee

3rd Position: Repeat same horses used in second position

Cost = $40 per $1 base wager

We are emphasizing our belief that the top two betting choices are the only horses capable of winning. We’re also giving ourselves a chance to catch one of four longshots in either 2nd or 3rd.

If either Classic Empire or Always Dreaming run off the board and we’re able to catch those longshots in the second and third position, this type of approach can pay much larger than expected. A player can easily modify this strategy by adding another more conservative ticket where Classic Empire and Always Dreaming must both hit the board.

This latter approach is very much a supplementary insurance policy that would allow the player to “have” the trifecta on a larger base wager if the most obvious and predictable result occurs.

Option B: Single and Spread Approach

1st Position: Always Dreaming                           1st Position: Always Dreaming

2nd: Position: Classic Empire                             2nd Position: ALL

3rd Position: ALL                                              3rd Position: Classic Empire

COST = each wager is $10 per $1 base wager

This approach might be slightly less creative, but sometimes standing firm with a basic opinion is the best way to gamble. Those who think Always Dreaming is a clear winner, but Classic Empire will find the money are guaranteed a winning trifiecta if they hit the ALL button in the remaining slots of the bet. In many cases, a messy longshot can crash into the money when it’s least expected and this approach allows the natural uncertainty of racing to work in the bettor’s favor if they are indeed correct about their top two opinions.

Option C: Lightning in a Bottle Approach

1st Position: Gunnevera, Hence, Looking at Lee and Conquest Mo Money

2nd Position: Always Dreaming & Classic Empire

3rd Position: ALL

COST = $64 per $1 base wager

For the player with deep pockets and the desire to shoot for the moon, Option C is at least rooted in some gambling logic. Here we’ve taken our preferred four longshots on top while keying the top two in second. If something surprising happens and neither Always Dreaming nor Classic Empire find the winner’s circle, we’ll just need them to run second. We will also leave open the possibility for another chaotic result in third, although we’re still covered if something very logical occurs by using all runners in that spot.
