The Viral Roundup – You Can Cav It All Edition

The Viral Roundup – You Can Cav It All Edition
King James and the Cavs continue their dominance at home, confirmation comes that the Giants will be missing their top offensive weapon and the National Hockey League goes on holiday. Here's the minty fresh world of sports you're waking up to on December 24, 2015.

Did You Hear?

Carmelo Anthony was out of the lineup with an ankle injury, but the upstart Knicks still put up a valiant effort against the best home team in the Eastern Conference. LeBron James scored 24 points and Kevin Love racked up a double-double as Cleveland (a 13 point favourite) squeezed past New York 91-84 to improve to 13-1 at home. Cleveland’s won all three of their meetings with Kristap Porzingis and the Knicks, but New York can score revenge at home on March 26.

Did You See?

NESN fixture Jack Edwards ranks as one of the most divisive broadcasters in sports and a recent viral clip does a good job of explaining why he has that rep. During Tuesday’s Blues/Bruins tilt in Boston, the B’s announcer snuck in a bit of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” as Ryan Reaves and Tyler Randell squared off. “I love the holidays!” screams Edwards as the fight comes to a close.

Did You Know?

– The National Hockey League has packed things in for their holiday break. Action resumes this weekend with a nine game slate on the calendar for Saturday. The collection of Boxing Day showdowns includes Habs at. Caps, Stars at Blues and Penguins at Wild. Oddsmakers currently have Alex Ovechkin as the most likely Stanley Cup contender at 11/2. The high scoring Dallas Stars are considered the most likely Western Conference option to lift the mug at 6/1. Last season’s champs Chicago opened as a 13/2 wager but have now plumped a bit to 10/1 odds.

– Sorry Giants fans, you’ll be without your best player on Sunday. Odell Beckham Jr.’s appeal of this one game suspension did not overturn the National Football League’s punisment and OBJ (and his 1,396 recieving yards and 13 TDs) will not be in the lineup at wideout for his team’s crucial Sunday showdown in Minnesota. (New York have ballooned into a six point road underdog for that clash.) Provided division rival Washington does not win on Saturday, this NFC tussle will have major playoff implications for the Giants.

– The New Orleans Saints have gotten some troubling news about their star quarterback. Drew Brees has suffered a torn plantar fascia in his right foot. Even though the Saints are eliminated from playoff contention (they’re currently 5-9), Brees has indicated that he would like to continue playing this season, although it is unclear if this ailment will allow that to happen. New Orleans are at home this Sunday with Jacksonville (still alive in the playoff chase) coming to visit. The Saints are currently a three-and-a-half point home favourite.

– Boise State entered last night’s Poinsetta Bowl as a seven point favourite, but beat that spread handily with a 55-7 blowout of Northern Illinois in San Diego. Brett Rypien threw for 377 yard and 3 TDs in the win and the Broncos defense kept NIU off the board in the first, third and fourth quarter. How good was Boise State’s D on Wednesday? They held Northern Illinois to 33 yards of offense.
