The Viral Roundup – Brushed Steel Edition
Pittsburgh scores a valuable AFC North victory, Washington continues their NFC East title chase and the Phoenix Suns outduel Minnesota's young guns. Here's the minty fresh world of sports you're waking up to on December 14, 2015.

Did You Hear?

Cincinnati were smacked around at home on Sunday afternoon. Pittsburgh, a one point road underdog, pummeled the Bengals 33-20 with DeAngelo Williams scoring two TDs on 76 yards rushing. It was a bad day for Cincy as starting QB Andy Dalton exited early with a thumb injury (backup A.J. McCarron took over) and tight end Tyler Eifert was also pulled to the sidelines with a concussion issue. The victory lifts Pittsburgh to 8-5, which is two games back of the orange and black in the AFC North title chase. Alright, back to the Dalton thumb issue. It’s unclear how long Dalton’s fractured thumb will keep him out of the lineup, but some reports have the entire regular season written off. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis would only say that next week’s game against San Francisco was off the table for the franchise quarterback.

Conor McGregor’s fast and furious first round obliteration of Jose Aldo on Saturday night ranks as the stuff of legend. The charismatic Irish MMA star crushed Jose Aldo in 13 seconds to graduate from interim featherweight champion to the official titleholder. When the fight was in its embryonic stages in January, McGregor was originally considered a +145 underdog. Fast forward through some developments into December 2015 and McGregor was bumped up to a -130 favourite with the line going all over the place. Speaking of UFC bouts, the latest UFC on Fox card goes down this Saturday. Rafael dos Anjos is considered a -260 favourite to retain his lightweight belt versus Donald Cerrone in the main event.

Did You Know?

– The Phoenix Suns entered play as a five-and-a-half point home favourite and exited with a 108-101 victory over the visiting Timberwolves. Brandon Knight contributed 25 points and Eric Bledsoe dished out nine assists in the W which gives Phoenix their third win in four games. Zach LaVine came off the bench to score 28 for Minnesota who dip to six losses in their last seven games.

– The Devils drew a blank in Brooklyn. Regular Isles starter Jaroslav Halak had the night off, but backup Thomas Griess provided 27 stops on 27 New Jersey shots to lead New York (a -140 home favourite) a 4-0 matinee win. Veteran blueliner Marek Zidlicky scored his second and third of the year in the win and the Islanders continue to be red hot scoring eight wins in their last ten games. Meanwhile, New Jersey remains eight points back of Washington for top spot in the Metro.

– Kirk Cousins threw for 300 yards and Jordan Reed caught nine passes to give Washington a valuable 24-21 win over Chicago and their first road victory of 2015. (The Bears are an ugly 1-5 at home.) Dustin Hopkins’ 4th quarter 47-yard field goal made the difference at Soldier Field and now the Skins are tied with Philly (who beat Buffalo 23-20 in Week 14) for top spot in the NFC East. Meanwhile, the Bears fall to 5-8 on the season.

– Derrick Henry became the first running back since 2009 to capture the Heisman Trophy. The Alabama star (a massive -500 favourite) beat out Stanford rusher Christian McCaffrey and Clemson pivot Deshaun Watson for the prize. Henry rushed for a conference record 1,986 yards and a very impressive 23 TDs this year. Alabama are considered a nine-and-a-half point favourite for their Cotton Bowl playoff showdown with Michigan State.
