The Viral Roundup – Fly Like An Eagle Edition

The Viral Roundup – Fly Like An Eagle Edition
The Patriots disappoint at home versus the dysfunctional Eagles, Golden State keeps on winning and college football reveals this year's quartet of playoff contenders. Here's the sparkling fresh world of sports you're waking up to on December 7, 2015.

Did You Hear?

The New England Patriots have gone from flawless to in need of fixing in a quick stretch. The Pats entered Sunday’s tilt with Philadelphia as a nine point home favourite and exited with a 35-28 loss (their second in a row) that saw New England victimized for multiple special teams touchdowns. Tom Brady scored four TDs (three in the air, one on the ground), but it was a returning Sam Bradford that emerged as the winning QB with two TDs on just 120 yards passing. This marks the first time since 2012 Bill Belichick’s squad has given up back-to-back losses. Meanwhile, Philadelphia improves to 5-7 and could be in a three-way tie for first in the NFC East if Washington loses to Dallas tonight.

Did You See?

Sports Illustrated has opened their Sportsman of the Year voting to the public and it’s led to an unlikely front-runner. American Pharoah, the first horse to win the Grand Slam of American racing, is trouncing fellow contenders like Serena Williams and Steph Curry. SB Nation’s Matt Ufford is not happy with this development and lays into this trend with a hilarious and insightful rant in this week’s Nuff Said.

Did You Know?

– The Golden State Warriors have hit 22-0 on the season. Steph Curry scored 28 for the Warriors (an 11 point road favourite) in their 114-98 victory over the host Nets. Golden State should get an intriguing test tomorrow night when they head into Indiana to face a sneaky good Pacers team that’s a solid 6-2 at home.

– A helper on a late empty net goal extended Patrick Kane’s point streak to 22 games as of Sunday. Chicago topped division rival Winnipeg 3-1 in a game that saw Marian Hossa’s fifth marker of the year and Corey Crawford stopping 30 shots. Jets keeper Michael Hutchinson made 29 saves in a losing cause.

– The playoff path to crown a college football national champion has officially been laid out. With apologies to Ohio State, Stanford and Iowa, there wasn’t much in the way of snubs when the final rankings were revealed on Sunday. #1 Clemson has a date with #4 Oklahoma on New Year’s Eve for their Orange Bowl semi-final, while #2 Alabama and #3 Michigan State square off in the Cotton Bowl. The two winning school’s advance to the championship game on January 11 in Glendale. The opening lines have Oklahoma as a two-and-a-half point favourite and Alabama favoured by nine.

– It’s no surprise that Zack Grienke would be a hot property in this MLB offseason, but his deal with the Diamondbacks sure felt like a surprise. Originally reported on Friday, the perrenial Cy Young contender has signed a six year pact worth over $206 million to join Arizona from here on out. Greinke’s leaving an extended stretch in Los Angeles that included a 19-3 record in 2015 with a microscopic 1.66 ERA. The Diamonbacks, who finished 79-83 last year, are seen as a 25/1 shot to win the World Series next fall.
