The Viral Roundup – Meet The Mets Edition

The Viral Roundup – Meet The Mets Edition
The Mets cast off the Cubs to fight for World Series glory, Toronto improves their ALCS odds and the NHL has Torts back in the mix once again. Here's the minty fresh world of sports you're waking up to on October 22, 2015.

Did You Hear?

The New York Mets are headed to their first World Series since 2000. The Mets swept the Cubs in Game 4 at Wrigley with an 8-3 final score and freshly clinched berth in the fall classic. Lucas Duda, Travis d’Arnaud and Daniel Murphy all homered in the knockout contest and Bartolo Colon pitched nearly five innings to score the W. (By the way, Murphy’s homered seven times this postseason and could tie the MLB record with one more.) The Cubs had no luck at the plate in this series batting a paltry .164 throughout the four games. The Mets will now wait patiently for the ALCS to burp up a World Series opponent.

Did You See?

We’d ask if you’ve seen Drake’s new “Hotline Bling” video, but it has been so ubiquitous that it’s practically impossible that you haven’t caught at least a chunk of it in Vine/Tweet form. The clip has been a meme magnet and that includes a revamped slice of “Hotline Bling” where Drizzy is holding a tennis racquet. We have that magical sight available below for your viewing pleasure. By the way, Drake’s beloved Toronto Raptors begin their season next week versus Indiana. Oddsmakers have the Raps as a 25/1 shot to win the Eastern Conference and a 50/1 prospect to win the 2015-16 NBA title.

Did You Know?

– Marvellous Marco! The Toronto Blue Jays (a -152 moneyline home favourite on Wednesday) have staved off ALCS execution thanks to an excellent starting peformance from Marco Estrada that included giving up only one hit in his first seven innings pitched. Chris Colabello hit his first homer of the postseason to help give the Jays the run support necessary to defeat the Royals 6-1 at Rogers Centre. Kansas City are now 3-2 in the series with the scene shifting back to Missouri for Game/s 6 and possibly 7. Fair warning for the Royals, Toronto’s 4-0 in all their elimination games this playoffs. Game 6 takes place Tuesday night.

– After a bit of a hiatus, John Tortorella is an NHL coach again. The Columbus Blue Jackets have fired Todd Richards after a disasterous 0-7-0 start and Torts has been brought in as Richards’ replacement. Big things were expected of CBJ after a very disappointing (and injury riddled) 2014-15 campaign. Richards had been behind Columbus’ bench since January 2012 and served as the coach of the club for their playoff appearance in 2013-14. Meanwhile, Tortorella comes in with a Stanley Cup ring from his time in Tampa Bay, mixed results from his follow-up seasons with the Bolts and Blueshirts and the weight of a terrible single season in Vancouver. Columbus (originally pegged as a 50/1 Cup hopeful) face the Minnesota Wild tonight in St. Paul.

– A broken foot will have Paul Stastny on the sidelines for five weeks or more. The St. Louis Blues forward suffered the injury in last Friday’s 4-3 win over Vancouver. Stastny was off to a pretty good start on the year with five points in five games. St. Louis are listed as a 12/1 Cup contender on the Futures board.
