Happy Monday everybody! We hope your Father’s Day went well. (Odds are if you are a pops you likely recieved something with a bacon theme.) The Viral Roundup is here to get you caught up on all the big news, big buzz and big developments headlining a brand new day in the world of sports. In today’s edition: Jordan Spieth is your 2015 US Open champ, the FIFA Women’s World Cup sheds some contenders and there’s a chance the Islanders might deal one of their young stars.
Did You Hear?
It wasn’t a pretty tournament, but you can’t say the 2015 US Open didn’t get people talking. Jordan Spieth managed a stunning win at Chambers Bay while Dustin Johnson suffered a heartbreaking defeat courtesy of a three putt finish on the 18th hole. Spieth has nabbed both the Masters and US Open titles in 2015 and ranks as one of only six players to win both of those tournaments in the same year. He’s only 21-year-old, by the way.
Did You See?
Did you catch Friday night’s Bellator 138 catchweight bout/freakshow starring Kimbo Slice and Ken Shamrock? It was ever bit as bats*** ridiculous as advertised. Heck, even Animal out of Legion of Doom showed up to back Shamrock. The fight was sorted out pretty quickly with Slice escaping a rear naked choke to hammer Shamrock into nap time. It looked like two dads brawling on the lawn after a barbecue. Here’s the key chunklets.
Did You Know?
– As advertised, the knockout stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup featured a trio of KOs. The day’s opening bout featured a thrilling upset with Australia topping Brazil 1-0 on Lisa De Vanna’s rebound finisher. In Montreal, France looked extremely impressive in their 3-0 domination of Korea Republic. Closing out the day, Canada pulled out a 1-0 blanking of Switzerland.
– Sunday’s MLB Father’s Day slate featured a number of exciting attractions, but it was the big bat of Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez that stole the show. Martinez crushed three jacks over six innings as Detroit (a +140 road moneyline underdog) walloped the Yankees 12-4. The victory busts Detroit out of a four game losing skid and marks the first time an opponent’s had three homers and six RBI in Yankee Stadium (new or old) since Bo Jackson did it a quarter-century ago.
– The NHL Draft is creeping up next week and trade talk is getting a workout more intense than any combine session. The most intriguing note to come out of the weekend? Newsday’s Arthur Staple has noted that the Islanders may be willing to part with star forward Kyle Okposo. The rebuild fixture has one year left on his current deal and it’s complete with a sexy $2.8 million cap hit. Speaking of the Isles, they’ve been whispered to be one of the clubs interested in acquiring Patrick Sharp from the cap-crunched Blackhawks.
