Hello! Welcome to another TGIF (shout-out to Kimmy Gibbler!) go-around of The Viral Roundup. We’re your friendly one-stop shop for all the big news, big buzz and big developments headlining a new day in the world of sports. In today’s edition: The Twins walkoff with a sweep, the Hawks make some administrative moves and Katie Nolan defends the majesty of hockey’s playoff beards.

Did You Hear?

Kenny Vargas played the role of walkoff hero in yesterday’s matinee clash betweent the Twins and Cards. His solo shot in the bottom of the 9th off Carlos Villanueva gave Minnesota a 2-1 home victory over their NL Central guests and put the AL on notice that the Twins are still a force to reckoned to be reckoned with. Next up for the Twins? A home set versus the Chicago Cubs. Meanwhile, St. Louis looks to bounce back tonight against the Phillies.

Did You See?

Hockey’s in quasi-hibernation mode when it comes to on-ice action, but it’s never a bad time to look back at the magnificent bounty the playoffs provides the globe. Garbage Time’s Katie Nolan had a stellar slice of commentary this week about a suggestion an NBC exec had about doing away with playoff beards. Katie comes to the rescue of Cup-ready whiskers in her trademark razor sharp style.

Did You Know?

– The Blackhawks enjoyed a fun lil’ Stanley Cup victory parade through the streets of Chicago, but that wasn’t the only piece of activity in the NHL. Their division rival from Minnesota has placed veteran opponent irritant Matt Cooke on waivers. The move was done with the expectation that the 36-year-old forward will be bought out if he clears waivers. In other roster news, the Winnipeg Jets have inked RFA blueliner Ben Chiarot to a new contract.

– Danny Ferry is done in Atlanta. The Hawks have agreed to buyout their now ex-GM with assistant general manager Wes Wilcox scoring a promotion. Head coach Mike Budenholzer will also be changing his business cards. Budenholzer will add “team president” duties to his plate in addition to his coaching gig. The Hawks were swept by Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Finals after racking up a franchise high 60 wins in the regular season. Oddsmakers have Atlanta as a 25/1 shot to win the NBA title next year.

– The Matrix is calling it a career. Shawn Marion (who you may have forgotten was still active) is hanging it up after sixteen seasons. Marion was a seldom used part of this year’s Cavs squad, but his career has lots to boast about: Multiple all-star appearances, a championship with the Dallas Mavericks and a rep as a stellar two-way player during his prime.
