Good morning! Welcome to a special TGIF (shout-out to Bobut) go-around of The Viral Roundup. We’re your daily one-stop shop for all the big news, big buzz and big developments headlining a new day in the world of sports. In today’s edition: The Giants can’t notch a single run in Pittsburgh, the Royals see their five game win streak dissolve and the Bronx Bombers lose a tight one at home.

Did You Hear?

The National League playoff chase is heating up and everyone’s clawing for position. A compelling four game set opened up in Pittsburgh last night with the Pirates and Giants doing battle. Charlie Morton struck out eight in 6+ innings as the Bucs (a -140 moneyline home favourite) blanked San Francisco 4-0. Neil Walker knocked his 13th round-tripper of the season in the win and Starling Marte was a handsome 2-3 at the plate with two stolen bases to boot. The Pirates have won seven of their last ten and trail St. Louis by 4.5 games in the NL Central.

Did You See?

Is there anything better than an awesome MMA walk-in? Sometimes they’re bombastic, other times they’re terrifying and if you’re lucky you’ll even get a silly one tossed in the mix. UFC Now elected to highlight the Top 5 walk-ins in UFC history and the results are below. The bulk of Brendan Schaub’s picks and logic are garbage, but you’re welcome to make your own improved 5 and know that it’s likely miles better.

Speaking of the Octagon, UFC Fight Night is going down this Sunday in Saskatoon. Max Holloway is considered a -165 favourite to defeat Charles Oliveira in their featherweight main event bout.

Did You Know?

– The AL East leading Yanks suffered heartbreaking loss at home on Thursday. New York (currently 1.5 games up in the division) lost a narrow 3-2 contest with men on in the final frame to Cleveland. Indians starter Josh Tomlin (relatively fresh from a return from shoulder surgery) gave up only two hits over seven innings in an incredibly impressive performance. The two teams clash again today with Carlos Carrasco on the mound for Cleveland and the Yanks countering with Masahiro Tanaka.

– Kansas City’s five game win streak is no more. The Boston Red Sox (a slight -120 moneyline favourite) topped the Royals 4-1 at Fenway and improve to three straight victories. Wade Miley scored his 10th win of the year and Jackie Bradley Jr. notched an RBI triple.

– Washington QB Robert Griffin III suffered a stinger and a possible head injury in last night’s preseason action. Things turned around for Washington after RGIII left the game and the club wound up defeating Detroit 21-17. The football world now waits for additional word on how severe Robert Griffin III’s damage is.
